My X1 has been acting up lately, it's running extremely hot, it hesitates going back to idle, and stumbles when slightly changing throttle when riding thru town in low gear low speed. It runs as it should all out. It isn't stock by far, I'm running Nallin Stage II heads, Nallin 1250 big bore kit, Nallin modified Force streetfighter exhaust (wrapped), .536 S.E. cams, Forcewinder intake and Race ECU. I run the coldest NGK plug I can find, the 9EA9 and I run the highest octane fuel I can find wich is normally 93. I think I may have an intake leak but when i sprayed 2+2 around the intake it made no change. I have been out of the loop around here for more than a few years and was wondering if anyone had any info. Was going to try colder plugs but NGK doesn't make any colder that I know, and was going to try octane boost but heard it can be bad for the O2 sensor. Any advice would be great, I'm tired of cooking my thigh more than usuall here lately. Thanks, JD |

Have you done a VDST scan yet? |

Did you do any re-mapping of the ECM??? By the looks of things, its running lean... Chase |

That was my take on the info provided, but can't be sure of any thing till a scan is done. Chasing ghosts is expensive and time consuming. Get the VDSTS software from Al at American Sport Bike, about $200 including cable for a nine pin port |

All of the above + Check the tightness on the exhaust stud nuts, I've had this cause hotter running. |

My MAIN hint in it running lean, would be... All of his mods are beyond the Race ECMs fueling... I am on the hairy edge of lean... and I am running a 1250, with OUT the headwork, and cams.... Chase |

All of his mods are beyond the Race ECMs fueling... Brian Nallin assured me that the race ECU could handle all the mods. Had it on the dyno with a sniffer a few years back and showed no signs of running lean. I have been running it with all mods since around 2002, and it just started these symptoms at the end of last summer. Plugs read normal, no sign of lean burn. I don't have the money for the VDSTS so I guess I'll let the shop take a look at it, I know the owner very well and I know he'll be straight up. |

Brian Nallin assured me that the race ECU could handle all the mods. That sure wouldnt be the case for me... BUT, if you had it on the sniffer, and all was well... okay... Are you getting a CEL? Maybe the fuel filter is clogged? Or the pump is getting week? Injectors clogged or in need of rebuild... You are right about the plugs... Find an O2 sensor safe Octane booster... I keep some in my tail section... Hope that helps.... Chase

I hate to take business away from Al, because he's a great guy, but I'd save the coin on VDSTS, and pick up ECMSPY, that will do all of what VDSTS can, and also allow you to add fuel to what is probably an extremely lean running condition worsened by an intake leak (I spray carb or brake cleaner on my intake seals when testing. Never heard of 2+2 that wasn't a Pontiac of some sort) |

intake leak is my guess... |

Well JD, if you say the plugs show no sign of lean, and you can't afford the software and cable set from Al, then you still need to have a diagnostic scan done. Go see your tech, and have him do it. |

JD, I have an X1 with similar mods but I have not experienced your heat problem ... except when the timing was off. As for the stumbling at low rpm throttle change ... not sure ... but again to the timing sensor. I have heard occurrences of metal flakes/shards at the timing sensor causing problems. As you have run this setup for years, I see no logic to suggest this is your problem but ... just take off the cover and have a look. I may start another thread on this final issue ... have you changed fuel stations lately ... or have they switched to ethanol blends lately? XnR |
