My 99 S3T came with a V&H exhaust on it. I purchased a stock muffler off ebay and I would like to put it on. (V&H too noisy)

Will this be a simple swap? Bike runs currently runs great, I don't need any extra hp and my neighbours are late sleepers.

Thanx,

Blakers

I did the same thing, got a used M2 with a V&H can, and right away, bought a stock muffler. I went ahead and got the 'updated' Y-mount for the front mount at the same time. I think I bought a new band clamp for the joint between the header and the muffler, but they can be re-used. The high-temp Copper gasket stuff for that seal is available at any auto parts store.
I think it took like 45 minutes to swap, and I am VERY slow and methodical. Well actually just slow, not that methodical.

I've had my stock off and on a few times - let me know when you are doing it and I'll come around and lend a hand.... or I can watch - whatever is more useful to ya! Good luck!

Jayvee,

Did you have to rejet for the stock pipe?

How well does it run with the stock pipe compared to the V&H? ie did you lose much power?

If so, mid-range or just top RPM?

Thanks,

Dave

When I replaced the V&H can, I checked the jets, they were factory sizes. I changed the low to a 46, and then a 48, and changed the Idle Air Mixture screw somewhat. I don't remember what main I tried but went back to stock Main.

So you could say I re-jetted when going to stock muffler. I didn't notice any power loss, it seems to run as fast as I wanted it to with the stock muffler. I have since done a series of other changes that only confuse the issue, intake, ignition, etc.

It's always good, sometimes a tad better than others. Still experimenting.

I bought a V&H as well and took it off one ride after putting it on.....I had my stock muffler and header and rear bracket ceramic coated. I didnt really get to work the V&H much but didnt notice any power difference..

i had the race kit on my 00 M-2... i just drilled out the idle plug and added the 88 sportster needle and it ran like a champ with stock jetting... later i put the stock pipes back on it before i sold it and it still ran like a champ.. every bike is different..

"Wow, that does look better."

It sure does. It should have come from the factory like that.

Its ceramic. Kinda does look like an aluminium paint job. Local fella did it. Easy to clean....

When I repack my V&H it made a big difference in the sound level. I figure the big performance gain with the SS2R is the weight savings.

Oh man I got the stock muffler back on, took off the SuperTrapp, last Sunday.
The bike sounds like an electric motorcycle by comparison, it is SO much quieter. Now I can hear all then engine noise and shifting clunks again. I'd forgotten how noisy those were. I like it quiet I guess.
I only had 8 discs in the SuperTrapp too.
I guess ebay unless somebody wants it.

I compared the weight, you know the stock is only about 3 or 4 pounds heavier. It's really not that significant. Didn't notice much of a power change, and didn't tinker with the carb yet either, but I can tell it needs the Idle Air screw changed just a bit.

When "i" PRODUCT IMPROVED the OEM Exhaust system on my 97S3T, all that was changed was to add a out let on the right rear of a 99 OEM muffler that was given to me ...

Prefabbed a Reversion chamber on the OEM 97 Header(OEM 97 Muffler had a smaller inlet) so the 99 Mufler would fix and did the Exhaust wrap thing ...

Saved the price($$$$.$$) of a after market
Header/Muffler and IMHO gives the same performance and is "QUIETER" !!!

So many people said the SuperTrapp "is not that loud" and "tunable" but I could hear almost no difference at all between 8 discs and 12 discs. 8 was the fewest I could run before the screws bottomed out.
The S-T looks great, but it's got to be twice as loud as stock, not just a little bit. I thought I wanted 'just a little bit' louder than stock. But maybe I like it more, as it is, than I thought I did. That ceramic is NEXT on my list though!

Well, I started this thread but I don't like how it finished.

Ordered all the parts to put the OEM muffler back on, last Sunday. Parts to be in at dealership on Wednesday.

Took the bike out for a birthday ride on Tuesday (took day off, I turned 50)

Stopped by some rookie cop 20 miles from no where (Ontario Provincial Police). He had a new car, new gun, new uniform, looked like a catalogue picture.

Charged me $110 for having a non-compliant exhaust.

I asked him why he pulled me over, was I making too much noise? No, he just suspected that it was a race exhaust because of the unique Buell look.

Was it too loud? He didn't know, he had no way of measuring it. I started it for him and he said it was kinda loud, but without anything to compare it too, how does he know?

He didn't care, told me to take it up with the Justice of the Peace, put the stock exhaust back on and maybe they will reduce the fine.

Now you need to make an appointment with the JP and that has to be done in person (2 hour roundtrip), then another round trip to meet and see if they accept the new exhaust as quiet and no guarantee that they will reduce the ticket.

Time off work, gas and 4 hours of riding... Cheaper to pay the fine.

(But I will probably fight it because he pi**ed me off) I was 10 miles from the nearest house and riding below the speed limit. He had no reason to pull me over.

Rookie cops, is there anything worse?

As a former Army tank driver I would humbly suggest permanent hearing loss is worse...

But that does really s%&k. Another, un-mentioned reason to go back to stock exhaust, COPS! Few months ago, when still running the stock exhaust, I blew past a radar trap facing the other direction, cops didn't even look up. If I'd a had the SuperTrapp on, they would have just turned that ray-gun around and nabbed me doing about 85, big ticket. Something to be said for the stealthy rider. But that deal just sucks, you could likely get off, by showing the order placed before the ticket, etc, but the time lost, et al, you have to weigh carefully. A ticket can make your insurance go up too, right? Maybe not a 'fix-it ticket' ?

Charged me $110 for having a non-compliant exhaust.....

It is now up to the office to prove that the muffler is "Non-compliant". With my traffic enforcement experience, I have NO IDEA how he could possibly do that given these circumstances! Since the offence was not unnecessary noise, volume MAY not be the issue, and like he has already said, "How does he know?"

My advice, which will not take any of your time, is to phone the detachment and ask for the detachment commander - (they hate getting these calls!) and complain of POSSIBLE abuse of process and malicious prosecution - that is "the charge was laid without any hope of conviction after trial". There is enough evidence of that in your conversation that you have shared with us.

Tell the detachment commander you want him/her to review the facts of the stop with the officer to ensure the officer HAD SUFFICIENT GROUNDS TO LAY THE CHARGE. Being respectful but firm will get you results.

If you do not get cooperation from the detachment commander you have recourse to Professional Standards Branch in Orillia GHQ.

This is NOT a bullying or threatening manoeuvre. You are simply asking for a review of the officers actions because it sounds like he laid the charge without sufficient grounds to believe the offence has been committed - and that is the point to this lengthy post.

I am not opposed to law enforcement of course. Police have wide powers and are held accountable as individuals to the citizens they serve, that's you and me buddy!

All I am suggesting, because of the scenario you shared, is the officer may be in error and you may want to get his detachment commander to have a second look at his actions.

Good luck and stay in touch.

PS Can I buy your muffler at a good price now??? LOL - jk

Your lucky at least. NV law states that ANY modification to the exhaust to increase sound is illegal. That doesn't stop every car, truck, and bike from having a modified exhaust but gives the officers a reason if they want.....

Today was a good day. I met with the Justice of the Peace and pleaded guilty with an explanation for my non-compliant muffler charge.
(To plead not guilty would have required at least one other trip to the court house, 1 hour away, and a day in court.)
By pleading guilty, I agreed to the decision by the JOP and that is final.)

I began by thanking him for seeing me, calling him Your Worship and was very polite.

I told him that if my VanceHines muffler was non compliant, it was a surprise to me.
I provided copies of the original bill of sale from Hammond HD in Indiana from 1999, showing that the V&H can was installed at time of purchase. I gave him copies of the federal inspection that took place when I imported the bike to Canada, as well as the provincial safety inspection, that included a check of exhaust.

To top it off, I gave him a copy of the V&H web page, showing my muffler, stating that it has special triple baffles and bragging about the more power and less noise that it provides.

I told the JOP that I had installed the stock muffler that I purchased from e-bay and fully intend to leave it on.

He accepted my guilty plea and completely reversed the $110 fine.

Maybe not as good as fighting it out in court and being found not guilty, but I will take it.
