After I got the bike all put back together and was riding it, I kept hearing a whining noise as it coasted to a stop. It sounded like it was coming from around the front sprocket.

Last year I took the original aluminum 27 tooth sprocket off, and installed a 29 tooth steel one. A week later I heard a noise as described above, and found the nut on the output shaft was loose. I tightened it and everything was OK.

I just checked it again, and while the nut on the shaft is tight, I noticed a couple thousandths play between the shaft and the pulley.

How much "play" is normal?

Has there been any issue with worn output shafts?

Mike
There should be no play with the pulley and the shaft. In the past we had problems with the pulley stripping it's teeth. I lost one on my S1 at just past 17k miles if I remember correctly. Turned out to be a pulley failure. Check and see.

hey buffalo,,, that paint job is looking great.. originally it would have had a steel 29t front pulley.. i have heard of several of these wearing out.. mine had the same problem, i think around 15,000 miles or so.. they have made several revisions of that pulley over the years.. the good thing is that the output shaft is harder than the pulley so it is usually ok and the pulley just needs replaced.. 27t were used on most of the latter tube frames and on sportster 883's.. the 29t are a little harder to find because the 883 guy like putting them on there bikes to lower revs at highway speed.. think american sport bike sells them at a reasonable price last time i was looking.. i currently have a lightened 27t i run on my s2t.. but with gas prices have been thinking of going back to the 29t.. i will have to run her for a bit and decide..
hope some of this helps,, aaron

.At 15,000 miles mine did that.It was covered by warrenty.Dealer re placed it.Lasted 5000 miles till end of war.Stripped again then I replaced it new out-put pulley and new out-put trans. shaft,no more problems!Found out new sprockits where made out of different alloy here on bad-web.Butch Once again, maybe 29 tooth sprocket was old cast, not as strong? My hearing is gone.Mine striped so bad bike would not move.Butch

Aaron,

I'm kind of in the same boat... "running but not completely resolved".

Just like it did last year, the more I run the bike, the faster that whirring noise goes away.

Oz, and I, took a ride to Rochester Saturday. It got better as we went. The only thing is that when we got to hi house I noticed that it had blown a little fluid out of the tranny vent. When I got home an checked it, it was low. More that what could have blown out (there wasn't that much oil on the bike). I put some more oil in it and it has ran pretty good since.

I'm supposed to leave Friday on a trip with it, and I'm on the fence about it, and apprehensive.

I have a few minor things to finish up on it (tie down loops, finish the tour-pack latch assembly).

All in all it's coming along OK I guess...

It's definately been a learning experience! It might not ever win any beauty pagent, but she suites me OK.

So did you get the hydro pack??

When you tightened the nut last, did you use red locktite and torque it to spec?

There is a sturdier nut retaining ring that was an up-date. You might want to see if you can get that on before your trip.

yeah i got the hydro pack..

personally i like used bikes.. ones that have been loved to death.. yes eventually i would like to purchase one new bike in my life.. but there is something about patina that new bike shine and smell just can't out do..

mine is coming back together.. i need another coil to play with to tell what the real problem is. but she is running for now.. put another 120 miles on here today..

sportyeric,,, thanks for posting that.. i was thinking of switching back to a 29 tooth pulley,, will have to check into that for when i do the switch...

If you're switching pulleys, be aware that there is an updated thicker pulley that requires a change to the seal and the spacer but adds 50% more spline.
