So, on the way to work this morning, my clutch cable popped... again... At 60(51+shipping form Al) bux a pop, its not THAT expensive, but, its not cheep either... Has anyone here used that hyrdaulic clutch set-up? I am thinking, though, while a painfull upfront cost... its probably gonna be cheaper for me in the long run.. Then again, I probably go through these things fast for some reason... And, before anyone asks, yes, I do keep my cables lubed... Chase |

Are these braided cables? Hard to believe you are snapping them. Is the cable binding somewhere? I am assuming everything is set correctly? IE; freeplay, chain tension etc. Maybe try Clutchlite or the Mueller. Supposed to reduce effort by 40%, which s/ lighten the strain on the cable. A lot cheaper than hydraulic. |

Yeah, everything has been good... Where the cables keep failing, is the ferrule is coming out of the cable.. at the lever end.... No extreme pressure, tension, binding, etc.. And they are the stock replacement cables, not the braided ones... Chase |

Chase, I just put on an SS clutch cable. Much nicer both in construction and feel. It was about the same price as the vinyl. Takes less effort to shift and is smoother. I am willing to bet one w/ solve your problem. BTW, I got mine outta the Fat Book. http://www.dragspecialties.com/fatbook/3/120/59426 31?q=buell |

I replaced my original clutch cable 3 years ago because it was so old, but it was working fine. The new clutch cable broke within the first year (snapped, not pulled out of the ferrule) and I reused the original one again. I just replaced it with a new cable, but only to be merciful to the original cable... which never did break. |

I think I will look into that clutch cable, and give it a whirl first... If its that much more effecient, maybe I will get more time out of it... Chase |

Chase, The cable is breaking at the clutch ferrule because it's bending. Make sure your clutch lever isn't worn and the ferrule "socket" is lubed. I use a moly based grease. I had the problem twice, since then I've made sure to keep the piviot and ferrule lubed and I've not had a problem since. This is the reason you see the plastic piece on many clutch cable ferrules. Jap bikes have been using that method for many years. Brad |

Good point Bluz. The cable ferrule is supposed to rotate slightly when the lever is pulled - if it does not it will require the cable to bend instead and will cold work itself and hence break. It could be combination of things that is causing this so a new clutch lever assembly may be a wise investment as well. Cable clutches have a long proven history of reliable service so I would "assume" the root cause of the problem is not the cable... |

E-Z lube cable luber$10.00.DennisKirk.com Panther piss of your choice. Works wonders. The one and only cable I ever broke(throttle) was back in 1974 while leading 250 Expert Main on a half mile(Winchester Va.) on the last corner of the last lap. Coasted to a 5th place finish. |

The FIX(ie: PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT) is to drill a small hole in the top of the clutch lever over the clutch cable end(FERRULE) so it can be "LUBED" !!! |

LaFayette, That is the kind of pragmatic down-to-earth advice we need! I am going to drill mine today so I can lube them from the top, like I do on my old Triumph. Thank you very much for that one. Regards, Dave |

Cable was ordered yesterday, and I am thinking about doing the "fix" to maybe have it last longer... Chase |

UPDATE: I put the new cable in last night. Definate difference in tension, smoothness of operation, etc... And, looks pretty damn nice too... thanks for the recommendation... Chase |

Chase, I figured you w/ like it as I was pretty impressed myself. One of the better ( and cheaper) mods I've made. |
