As many of you know, I have a 91 RS that has S2 bodywork, etc. I was riding it Sunday and had a bit of gas leaking around the flange on the gas cap. I assume the Hylomar sealant has given up so I plan to reseal the cap with some new goop.

Since my RS was not eligible for any recall stuff that the S2 so thoroughly enjoyed (Whoopee! New Parts!) it missed out on the stylish and Oh-so-svelt gas tank vent replacement that my wife's S2, and probably all of the ones here, got.

(I've even still running that pre-Showa white-springed shock - Yep that Al guy is livin' on the edge!)

My question is: I know it's been a while, but do any of you guys remember why the vent was changed in that recall? Am I risking life, limb or embarrassement amongst my peers is I was to....say, leave it the hell alone?

I figure if I have the gas cap apart, I could change it out, but it's a special order part and I'd need to await it's arrival from BMC and worst of all - PAY for it. Something the rest of you REAL S2 riders got for FREE!

It's just so danged unfair, wouldn't ya say?
I guess it's what I get for riding a poser S2. I apoligize for that.

AL

Here is a photo of the offending gas cap/vent area.

gas cap - but you KNEW that, didn't you!

I think the concern with the design was that it could continue to vent if the bike was inverted...in which case, you'd want it to *not* vent and keep all the gas in the tank.

Don't turn it upside down to shake coins out of the seat, and you'll be fine.

Could it have had an occasional plugging problem as well therefore not venting? I don't remember why it was changed. It's probably in one of the service bulletins someplace.
