Dave I added a filter to the S1, which didn't come with one. Here is a picture showing the filter and line, hope it helps. Joe It's just aft the ignition switch, behind the choke knob. |

thanks to herr karma, a carb arrived today with the correct linkage, so maybe it will run again... thanks joe... what is the purpose of the small vent tube on the bottom of the buell carbs? i dont think any of the harleys have that feature.. |

My guess is bowl over flow. |

does efi and carb use 5/16 fuel line? i put 5/16 on it, but nightrider.com says to use 1/4 inch... |

Dave that is the bowl vent. If the 5/16" seals up it just more supply available. I believe my S1 had 1/4" line. In the picture notice the drain line next to the shock spring. Let us know how the carburetor works out. Joe

joe, are you happy with your stock tank conversion?... as much as it is going to cost to get the carb tank painted to match, maybe i would be better off converting my stock tank... anyone know if these plastic tanks can be repaired if they get a hole? that tank material melts to look at it hard, some really funky stuff... |

i fired it up today.... it was hard to start, im going to have to do some tweeking..it only ran for a couple of minutes and died.. the battery is fairly new, but it went dead from cranking... i have the stock coil on it in dual fire mode...when i get around to making some spacers for the coil, ill try single fire mode.. im waiting on some choke cable parts, so i will have a choke... |

Dave It will be a lot easier to keep running and start once you have the choke plunger and assembly installed. I'm fairly happy with the conversion. I tested the range finally. I got 155 miles before reserve and it ran out at 191. So those are comfortable numbers for me. The thing that's a small negative is the petcock is a little deeper under (further toward the engine)the tank than my S1 but this is minor and not a larger problem. I just have to readjust. The Pingel is operated in the horizontal plain where as the BMC petcock is in the vertical plain. Joe (Message edited by bad_karma on May 18, 2008) |

i charged up the battery today and the bike started pretty quickly...however, it ran for about two or three minutes and it started to stall and wouldnt take the gas... then it wouldnt start... then if i let the motor cool off, it would start again...what is making the bike quit when it gets warm? i bought a new intake manifold and gasket, but the front carb to manifold gasket seems a bit loose... i put anothe gasket on it and no change.. but the carb seems plenty tight when its installed...still waiting on the choke parts... |

Dave do you have the enricher plunger in the carburetor? If not check your plugs and they will likely be black. Joe |

joe, i bought the pingel adaptor plate... did you install yours with out the gasket and just used the sealer? is your fuel pump still installed inside the tank? you said you made a plate to go inside the tank to bolt the adaptor to... what thickness of metal did you use? thanks (Message edited by werewulf on May 22, 2008) |

Dave I used the gasket and sealer. I also made a metal backing plate in the tank from a piece of 3/8 scrap steel. Yes and no on the pump. The pump, regulator and about a 1/3 of the assembly bracket was removed. This has sealed really well with over 3500 on the new setup and no problems. If you find that the running problem is the carburetor and should want you money back no problem. If was running good when I took it off for a HSR42 and the 1250 kit. Hope to see you ,the S3 at the Dragon one of these times. Joe Dave have you looked at the plugs since you started it up? Joe (Message edited by bad_karma on May 23, 2008) |

Me and my twin bro both have S3's and really like them. Even tho mine is having a major malfunction, I will see it through! Christian |

Dave Check and make sure that you have power to the connector. I actually moved mine from the ignition relay. Could be the sensor. I will recheck the electrical schematics and see if the output from the sensor has a junction that might have gotten disturbed during the rewiring. Also try jumpering in a ground because I believe the ground ties in at a junction. When you lose the speedometer input from the pickup the lights work but no needle movement and trip and odometer do not update. Joe You can try continuity checks with power removed. For the sensor wire to the back of the speedometer and also for the ground. (Message edited by bad_karma on May 28, 2008) |

Dave Check the white wire form the VSS connector (B) to connector (39) pin 2. This is the signal wire from the VSS. Power comes in on a Gray wire to the VSS connector (A) from S21. Ground is supplied to the VSS connector pin (C) on a black wire from S20. None of the VSS wires go to the ECM. The first picture is of S16 which supplies 12VDC to S21, it is just to the outboard of the rear cylinder head. The second picture is of S21(power) and S20(ground) both above the front head next to the trouble shooting connector. The third photo shows connector 39 the Black\white 10 pin connector next to the mount. Joe Checkout page 7-52 in your manual. S20 ground comes from ignition ground S17 then to chassis. Sorry no pictures but I believe it is on the brake side above the battery. (Message edited by bad_karma on May 29, 2008) |

i finally got the single fire coil to fit, by making an offset bracket...in the stock location, the coil conflicted with the fuel tank...i had been running the stock coil in dual fire mode..i really didnt expect much difference when i switched over to single fire.. what a difference...it starts when you touch the starter...it runs better than my 08 xb... smooth power delivery and throttle response...i havent experimented with the different advance curves, as its kind on in the middle at the moment.. it runs so good, i hate to touch it..

i dont want to jinx it, but it sure is running good... just as good as the efi, but better throttle response and starting..ive put about 3 hundred miles on it in the last few days... now the only big issues, are the fuel tank and the speedo...should i paint the carb fuel tank or convert the stock tank? ive run out of options on the speedo, it is getting power and still doesnt work.. maybe its the sensor, but it was working fine before the mods... i can pay the dealer to trouble shoot it, or get a dakota digital speedo.. i have been riding by the tach, but if i ever wanted to sell the bike, it would detract from the selling price... any suggestions? |
