Been a while since I've touched base, but its amazing to come back and see a lot of familiar old faces and friends. Buellin' obviously stays in the blood. Firemanjim still on the salt! Rocket hasn't killed himself yet?!? Blake still gushing over Cyclones! Court...well, holding Kourt. Since I was here last I've gotten married to a great woman, and as an added benefit I've acquired 3 great step kids: An 18 y.o. stepson and twin 16 y.o. step dtrs. Having no natural children of my own this has been somewhat of an....errrrr.....ahhhh...adjustment. But for the good, I might add. So much for catching up. That brings me to the Buell related stuff. I taught my step son to ride last summer, starting out with a Honda 250 dirt bike, then a rider training class then (gulp) the leap over to my S1W. He's turned into a pretty good rider and is amazingly responsible for an 18 y.o. turned loose on a hooligan bike! At first he kinda looked with envy at the UJM crotch rockets but quickly became a Buell fan with the attention he gets on the Nuke & Molten S1W. Even rode it to his HS graduation to surprise his classmates who were clueless he was a biker now. In the course of this my first Buell, a '97 M2 beater, was kinda neglected. Then it was down with the dreaded head motor mount casting failure and parked forlornly in the corner of the garage. Thru his interest and wanting me to go riding with him, we decided to resurrect the M2. So repairs are under way and we have dubbed the project the Mp2 BUDGET BUILD. As in MULTIpurpose Deuce. We have the original slim tail and tank. Somewhere along the way I acquired a Manta tank and combined it with the narrow tail. Then I acquired a wide tail section/seat for more comfort on longer trips. Of late I've been scouring evilBay for deals on parts. And our idea is to build a unique old skuell cafe racer style M2. But with the possibility to make quick changes back to the more comfy seat, bars, etc if we want to tour on it. Or other switcheroos if we want to track it. ALL ON A BUDGET. So we won't be building a mountain motor or even obsessing over slick paint jobs. Just a clean, simple, reliable yet unique M2 that will be versatile with a few changes depending on what mood strikes us. Hence, the Mp2. Look forward to you guys' input/advice/criticism/suggestions. Stay tuned. jim (Message edited by dueller on March 20, 2008) (Message edited by dueller on March 20, 2008) |

Mid-west Georgia right now, in Columbus. "Hey, DJ...you still riding naked?" Still riding naked and loving every minute of it! "I got an idea I think you'll like if it pans out." I like it already... whatever it is. "If someone could walk my computer illiterate azz thru downsizing fotos I'll start posting some project pics." Get the free Irfanview software in the Pics forum. Very user friendly and painless to install. I got everyone in my office using it. |

Dependent! That's how I wound up here. I grew up in Europe and Asia before we moved back to the Columbus. I finished high school here (Baker) then moved away for 21 years. I came back in 2001 for a very good reason, but now I'm trying to formulate an exit strategy. This place is just too flat. |

My father retired not too far away from Plains... Draneville unincorporated. Probably not even on a map, it's just one building near an intersection; a volunteer fire station with a 60's era fire truck. That's a heck of a place for an urban kid from Chicago to retire, but he loves it. |

Heh... I'm wearing a Flint River HD/Buell T-shirt as I type. They are in Albany. What a coincidence. |

What a cool way to bond with your kids. Im dropping all the hints I can to get my Dad back into riding. He had a very close call on his Kawi back in the 70's and hasnt ridden since. Id love to see pics of your project! (Message edited by TORQUEMONSTER on March 21, 2008) |

Here he is getting ready to go to his graduation last May...bike ironically matches his school colors.
And a little inspiration for the project from VD Clasics in France. But at $1200 for the seat combo, outta the budget. Besides it looks less comfy than stock slim M2 seat.

Though a thumper and not a Buell, this is more the minimalist look he wants to go for. But with more upholstery and lights, of course...

"Oscar Boyles or Charles Goodrum ring a bell?" I knew a Mr. Goodrum who was a principal at South Columbus, I remember him. I was Baker class of 80. For a school with such a bad reputation, I sure had a great time... and learnt some stuff too. |

Dueller, The fairing on that cool single looks very much like a Pirahana fairing from Daivd Firth Design. (He made these in Minneapolis, MN in the 1970s but there are probably some around if you look.) I have one on my 1970 Triumph 650 and it would look great on a Buell M2. Good luck, Dave |

the boy has taste airtech has fairings like that for about $175 but the windscreen from gustafsson would be another $100. http://www.airtech-streamlining.com/index.html http://www.bikescreen.com/ as far as seat padding goes i find a properly shaped seat more comfortable than an over padded one. the 50 gallon seat on my '99 M2 just sucks! (besides being the most ugly thing i'd seen until the chopped one in the other thread!) |

Fuzzy...I'm thinking the airtech dunstall 1/4 fairing kit is what we may go with. I enjoy the M2 but it looks "thick" to me, especially with the later body work, large seat, wheel hugger. We basically are shooting for a bare bones bike with mechanicals exposed. Do you have a link to your seat project? That's another issue we'll have to deal with. We do kinda like this seat with no rear fender but it, too, is pricey:

think i'm staying with the stock windscreen. that's not bad at all. plenty of room for the electrics under there but i kinda like them flatter on top for strapping a load on back. what are those pipes??? i think tuber frames should be shown off! you mean the seat on my xb? not really, no pics of process and just alum sheet bent and screwed to bottom of stock pan for the kicker. glue some foam on, dunk whatever leather tandy has on sale in a bucket of water and stretch it over and staple or pop rivet bottom. for the m2, still haven't ordered it, but pretty much have myself talked into the airtech xr750 tail. the numbers look like it should fit pretty well with an s1 tank i picked up. seat pan will probably start out aluminum sheet with 5/16 foam and go from there. have a set of peg mounts like that test cut out of 1/2" aluminum but need more mill time for a finished set out of 3/4. feels like feet are dragging just going straight with stock setup... picked up a set of clip-ons off ebay, but not sure i want to go that low. may go more like a set of crossroads. and then my biggest disappointment, the front brake! compared to the xb, there is no front brake! hoping a set of lyndall pads will help, everything else looks expensive! |

Right now, i wouldnt do more than 100 miles at a time on my slim seat. I upgraded to the bigger seat and can easily do lots more. I prefer the looks of the slim seat, and if i can find a used corbin seat for that at a good price, i would cosider going back to it. But with a lot of trips planned this year, i will most likely stick with the big seat. |

OK..here we go. The neglected 97 M2 with later style body work. Always looked thick in the middle but more comfy than early style...
Although we wanna go for an old school cafe look, nothing wrong with modern composites, eh? Picked up on the cheap from ebay, my spare parts bin and the sale table at the local HD shop.
Layin out the parts to get an idea of how it will look...mystery seat will need some work...think I'll raise the headlight to make the fairing sit higher and more raked back. Next...experimenting with a variety of handlebars....and will probably go with the small original tank.

My mystery seat is from an X1...we are going to try to modify it to fit and sit slightly more rearward to accomodate us. (I'm 6'1" and step son is 6'4"). Also will mod so it covers the rear frame rails so no plastic seat base will be necessary. I think the profile will work but the seat height will be somewhat lower than stock seating. If it works as planned, it will be a nice, comfortable compromise between the S1W and the wide arse M2 seat.

finally ordered the xr750dt tail, think it's going to work! stock tailight tucks in there nicely, need to trim the tail back a couple inches to unshroud it a bit so tailgaters can see it.

clip-ons said nope to the manta, but yeah the small tank does look better bars don't like the cf hamcan either! forcewinder on the way, doesn't fit dueller's budget build category, i think. (and going to probably have to make it droop) |
