i hope this can sound objective...im a returning tube owner... my first was a new 01 X-1...i kept it for a year and really enjoyed it... at the time, i only lived 30 minutes from deals gap.. (it was originally "dills" gap by the way)... i go thru motorcycles like socks and have bought and sold 14 motorcycles since the year 2000 and average 40-50k miles per year riding..most have been harleys with a few bmw's and a hayabusa thrown in... i sold my x-1 in protest, because i got pizzed about the way the the moco dumped the tubes like a bad habit and i smelled doom coming for buell... in 03, i found a 00 m-2 with a race kit in florida and bought it...i kept it for a year and traded it...once again, i let some of the negative propaganda work on me.. all i would read is problems with the buells and people jumping ship... now in retrospect, i have been on many different bike forums and there is not a brand without problems...the new harleys are having serious problems etc.. i have just sold (given away) both of my 07 harleys and have arrived back in buell ownership 99 S-3 and 01 M-2.. i have determined that there is no such thing as a brand without troubles.. if there is, i havent found it...i guess i love the simplicity of the tube models and the fact for the most part you dont need special tools to work on them.. i havent heard the xb crowd doing much complaining, so maybe they are without issues, i dont know, i dont read much on that part of the forum... the only problem i have with the xb bike, is its small size and i probably would look silly riding one... im putting an S-3 fairing on my M-2, so it doesnt look so small... oh well, thats just my opinion... |

I agree with no brand is perfect. My VFR with 1,100mi. on it has left a big puddle of oil underneath it this winter. It's time to pull the side panel (never had to do that with the S3) to see where it is coming from. I need to get this fixed before MBV. |

well, like they say, never say never...just a little while ago i bought an 03 xb9 firebolt... i guess i will just have to look silly riding it... thats one of the dangers of a forum like this... if i hadnt been on the forum i wouldnt have seen the bike and bought it... |

At 6'2" and 240#'s I probably look a bit bigger than the S1W I love, but no one has made a comment yet. If someone does, I guess I'll just respond "I don't ride it, I wear it." On a side note, a buddy who has owned and raced a number of makes (latest is a line of Duc's) rode my bike for an afternoon, came back and said"That's the angriest damn motorcycle I've ever ridden." Sums it up for me.... |

Werewulf - so does that make us a support group...or a bunch of enablers? LOL. Congrats on the new ride, I've been pondering the same thing. Might have to take the leap... |

If Buells were perfect they would be boring. Learn were your nearest welder is. Long live the funk. |

isnt the lifespan of a tuber belt around 50k plus miles? i was reading the the xb belt is only good for about 15k miles...that doesnt sound like a step foward, or do i have it wrong? |

I think its wise to replace an older tuber belt every 30K miles depending on condition. I have 23,000 on my 2000 X-1 belt and it looks just fine. I hear the newer belts go a long time, and are pretty much a life-time deal. However, belts can get damaged from rocks, debris, or other things, and need to be inspected regularly. Main thing with tubers is keep an eye on oil consumption so you dont run it low. Otherwise, my bike has been trouble free in the engine dept and runs very strong. Christian |

Over 50K on my S3T and approaching 25K on my XB12X. Sure there have been a few little niggles but nothing bad enough to give up the fun factor! If you ride anything hard it's gonna break from time to time but good maintenence will keep the breaks to a minimum. That's prolly true for most things but it still goes to show that life can sometimes throw you a curve. Just lean into it and hit the throttle! You'll soon be past it! BC Steve |

One nice thing about the XL1200 motor is the strong aftermarket and good availability of both stock and performance parts. These motors are rebuildable and could theoretically be kept going indefinitely. Stuff will wear out but it will be fixable. |

I'm 6-1 and two-fiddy. Yeah, my X1 looks small on me. I do love the bike. My 14th to date and dont see myself selling it. We may be enablers as said but, good ones at that. Ride hard be safe. |

Just sounds to me like you're more worried about other people's problems than enjoying your own ride.... |

I hear ya Werewulf. I have my 02 M2 set up that way. (installed a S-2 fairing) I stand 6,2 240 and for years I would not buy a Buell because I didn't fit. Now w/ this setup I am very comfortable and I don't look like an elephant riding a Tic Tac |

My '99 has an original belt with 55,000 . I took the wheel off to have the tire changed, and the belt looks fine. Good point about checking the oil level often. I've been shocked at how low I'd let the oil level get. They don't hold much to begin with. I've really gotten my motor hot running lean at high altitudes. Like up to 14,250 feet. I'm 6'1" 175 lbs. I have a small windshield (like a small standard windshield) but I think I'll use a full face helmet and flyscreen next time. Plenty of leg room and comfort for me. TT |

I think I'd rather fix my Buell with a big problem than a Honda/Kwak/Duc/Yam with a small problem...........at least I can do it myself. |

Welcome back...I put a bunch of miles on my S3T, then went to a Ulysses. Had that as my only ride for a while and as I weight it down with hard bags and farkles, added a 99 X1 to the garage for local rides and commuting. That's pretty much where it's going to stay. The Uly will be for touring, and the X1 for daily/local riding. In the meantime, I've had a few BMWs, a couple of Harleys, a Ducati, and two Yamahas. With the exception of the Ducati, none had the staying power of the Buells. Great bikes. Enjoy the stable. |
