Believe it or not my drain plug came out for the first time tonight. 22k+ miles on the clock and there was very, very little shavings on it. All the insides look great but I took off the primary to check my adjuster shoe. Here's what it looks like.  and  There are some grooves in it but they are very shallow at best. Would it be fine just to put it back in or should I go ahead and replace it? I've read horror stories and don't want to wind up like that. Here's what the innards looked like. Looks like normal wear to me. BUT I would replace it. Your already there and have it out. I'm not sure but it doesnt look like the updated part. | ||

Unless you don't have the part and are in some hurry to put things back together, replace it. It's a inexpensive part and well worth the peace of mind. | ||

"Anyone with a Buell produced before June of 2000 may want to check their adjuster if you have the primary cover removed. The metal plate which the adjuster bolt goes through was .115 of an inch thick. The replacement is improved with the metal beefed-up to .250". The part number for the new one is 39975-90A." - Pulled from the X1 files. I would replace it. | ||

Yep, replace it. That looks like the older thinner plate on that one, the newer updated tensioners have a thicker plate. Cheap insurance, especially since you've already got it apart. | ||

You would be crazy to not replace it now! Also, get the upgraded metal/rubber starter motor gasket unless you want to take it apart again soon. Seriously - DO IT! I watched a highly experience rider go down right in front of me last spring (and get hurt). We could not figure out why, but I did notice a lot of oil under the starter that I figured at the time found its way out during the crash. when my starter gasket started to leak in August I 1st noticed it because a small amount of oil was on the left side of the tire. Sometime after that I had a Eureka moment and realized he was in a tight 90 degree left hand turn and lost control so quickly that it had to be because of oil on the edge of his tire. At the time we blamed it on sand, but I was right behind him and did not slip at all. Obviously get the metal/rubber primary gasket as well. | ||

Alrighty then, will go ahead and order it, it is the older, original part. I am not on any kind of timeline and I have several more parts I need to order anyhow so I can add this to the list. | ||

WOW I wish I had taken a pic to show the difference. Just eyeballing it, it looks to be almost 3X the thickness of the original part. I feel much better now that I've replaced it. Now just to get it all back together again. These exhaust gaskets are a pain in the butt. | ||

I guess I've neither heard of nor had a dealer tell me about the tensioner. Is there a recall? Does my 98 S1W need this new part? I too am showing some trace amounts of oil around the starter. Thanks! | ||

No recall Big, but you should get the upgraded tensioner and gaskets while you are in there. I'm glad you picked up on the starter gasket leak as the safety concern it is. The new gasket is as nicely engineered as any I've ever seen and completely different from what was in there. I prefer to ride with confidence, so when better parts are available - I strive to put them in before something bad happens! | ||

Yes Dan, unless it has already been changed. I don't know how to check from the outside to tell if it's been accomplished. When mine failed on the S1 the plastic section of the shoe lodged itself up in the tranny. I lost two days at the Dragon. Joe | ||

I think it would be impossible to tell from the outside. Everything looks the same save the plate the shoe slides onto. I was told yesterday at the stealership that all the parts I got were updated; primary gasket, shift shaft gasket and tensioner shoe. I also got a private (since I was the only one there) presentation of the 1125R, nice, I like it. Everything went back together smooth as silk, new primary gasket is nice. |
