All, My front motor mount, the right side of the Y, failed yesterday while I was headed to work. I have two questions: 1) Is there any possiblility that Buell might help me out with the repair since the front mount has been a problem area for tubers? I do have a lot of miles on the bike, but you rarely expect to break a frame or motor mount unless you abuse the bike - which I don't. 2) The repair doesn't look all that difficult, but is there anything to watch out for while I replace the front motor mount? I've done the isolators and swingarm and neck bearings and that sort of thing, and this doesn't look much more difficult. A little background, it's a 2000 M2 Cyclone with a little over 75K on the clock. |

Get yourself a Stenzel Stütze and you will never ever have that problem again. http://www.stenzel-parts.de/14321.html |

What does that Stenzel thing do and how does it prevent mount and bolt breaking? |

The bolt didn't break, it was the right side of the mount that broke. The center bolt and left side of the mount are still attached. I looked at the updated part listed above. Does it translate more vibs to the rider? Does anyone have any hints at making the motor mount swap easier? v/r Tony |

You could try page 29 of your S&S Sportster Buell catalog. Or the ever-reliable Google search, if you enter "CNC MACHINED BILLET MOTOR MOUNTS FOR BUELLS" it is almost certain you will find a decent one. I still don't understand WHY the Stenzel part works, it looks like just a strap from the from mount to the rear. I can accept that it does, but just don't see how (why)... |

I'm going to guess that the Stenzel part somehow negates some potential bolt/mount flexing which may or may not be at least a possible partial cause of bolts and/or mounts breaking. (I think I've got enough disclaimers in there ) |

it could be that it takes advantage of the surrounding heated air, causing an uplift on the motor.. but ive been wrong before! |

The Stenzel Stutze reinforces the front engine mount (through the front isolator mount) and helps keep most of the forces introduced to the cylinder head fasteners in shear. Whether this will keep the left front fastener from breaking (and leading to a mount failure) is yet to be established, but it certainly makes very good sense. Stenzel never retured my e-mail regarding ordering this part, so I intend on fabricating my own reinforcing strut. |

there is a billet mount some where I use the NRHS mount from American Sport Bike. Never had a problem with it and it looks good. |

It´s no voodoo, just physics. The Stenzel bar relieves some of the load given to the front head´s threads, the bolts or front engine mounts by the vertical movement of the engine. This movement leads to bolt/mount flexing.Mikej´s guess has been right. The stenzel bar decreases this flexing, which leads to the well known fatigue fractures. Hope you can get what I mean-I´m not a native speaker. Believe it or not,but there is not a single tuber known in Germany with a broken front mount, stud or header thread, after the Stenzel Stütze has been mounted. This part is more or less standard over here. It is established over years,on hundreds of tubers Ralph @Daniel:If Stenzel did not reply, you can try this address. It might be more successfull http://www.luckyhands.de/kontakt.html (Message edited by xldevil on January 14, 2008) |

Ralph, What do they charge for that bar? And do you know if it is available here in the U.S.? |

Mike,I don´t think it is available in the US,although it is very easy to produce. Someone could make a good deal out of it. I´m not sure about the patent right. The price in Germany is 79 Euro,I believe. I bought mine in 2003.One of my first investments. |

Thanks, that's about $117 U.S.Dollars. Looks like it has a shoulder bushing on the forward end of it. Wonder if that's necessary if one were to hammer and drill some flat bar stock at home. Measurement would probably be critical as would the angle to some extent. |

Bablefish translations:

Advantage: Prevents reliable that departures of the fixing bolts. And, or breaking the owner. And or breaking out the front cylinder head. Sometimes, also total sagging of the Motors.(depending upon break) Disadvantage: Approx.. 200 gr. MehrgeVorsicht: yielded. Material: High-strength aluminum, black plastic-coated

I have one. The mount was pricey, but it's a beautiful piece. The NRHS mount also included the mounting hole for a tie-bar (like an X1 uses - the M2 didn't come with one installed from the factory). The hole for the tie-bar frame mount was already there (unused on a stock M2) so I added one. I didn't really notice a difference, but it's something to think about. |

Mike, don´t use translation programs. There´s not much sense in the translation of the web text,as you can see. To make it clear, the Stenzel Stütze is more than just a straight piece of steel. Besides the fact that you got to get the right angle for the bar, that´s slightly bend at the front part, you have to mill a groove at the front part of the bar, face down. This groove has to comply with the form of the front isolator and substitutes the D-washer. If you own a vertical mill and the facility to bend aluminium, making your own reinforcement bar will probably be crowned with success.

Replacing the D-washer and clearancing then explains the cost. I wonder if Al at American Sport Bike would consider bringing some of these over? I wonder how/if they'd sell over here? I've got some co-workers here heading to Germany (Velbert) in the next few weeks, if I had the spare cash I'd see if they could grab one and bring it back. You got to order that part on the postage way.Takes a minimum of 7 days to get it.There´s no shop I know that sells these over the counter. But I´m living next to Velbert(20 Km) and if your co-workers won´t mind to come to Essen to give me the money and take the stütze,I would try to order the bar in advance. Send me a pm on that if you like to. Maybe your co-workers can bring me the fork legs that I´m going to buy here on badweb. This would save me a lot of money for shipping, customs and tax.You know, you scratch my back and I´ll scratch yours Ralph (Message edited by xldevil on January 15, 2008) |
