Werewulf,

I own a 2000 S3 (no "T"). Parts are no problem at all. Lots of engine parts are common with Sportsters so your HD dealer will stock them (and prices are CHEAP compared to Japanese or European bike parts). There were some relatively minor niggles with the pre-2001 tubers that are easy to upgrade.

First, verify the rear shock has been replaced; there's a recall on it. Any Buell dealer can run the VIN for you and tell you if the upgrade has been done. They will also replace it for you if necessary; there's no time limit on the recall. There are a couple of other minor recalls (throttle cable & gas tank vent) which should be checked too. The original front muffler mount is prone to breaking; get a "Y" type mount for a 2001/2002 Buell. I think you can still order the upgrade kit from Buell. IIRC the price is around $50 and it's pretty easy to install. The 2001/2002 Buells have a heavier primary chain adjustment shoe; the earlier ones are somewhat prone to breaking (especially if the primary's not adjusted properly and/or you regularly wheelie). The updated shoe will cost you less than $20 and another ~$20 for a primary gasket.

Other niggles? If it's got the original rocker cover gaskets, they'll eventually leak. Upgrade to Cometek (sp?) coated metal gaskets. The shifter linkage tends to be a little sloppy; you can upgrade to a 2001/2002 shifter, or you can get bronze bushings that'll tighten it up from American Sport Bike. The original rear isolators tend to give out early; if/when it happens be sure and install the upgraded parts.

That may sound like a lot of stuff, but I'm sure there are 2000's still running out there with NONE of these upgrades, and if you want to add them you're only talking a couple of hundred bucks.

My S3 doesn't get ridden much lately (I got a Uly about a year ago), but it's a great bike.

I have found much the same as Hugh. So far the only part that I was unable to get was a FI fuel filter. As Buelligan you will of course find a suitable replacement else where.

No, not really. Changed to a carb and picked up a nice billet filter for that application. Seems to me most automotive FI filters with the proper pressure level and physical configuration should work. Maybe even the aftermarket billet filter I got out of J&P Cycle might work. It appears to have the strength.

Iron Machine sells a billet Fuel filter that never needs changing. It's 50$ and I know it will fit my 2K X1, not sure about the S3. Parts s/ be no problem. I haven't had any issues finding them for mine. Don Castro has a web page that deals w/ tuber issues, specifically-the S3. Great source of info. http://home.comcast.net/~buellstuff/DonCastosS3Con ventionalWisdom.html Site says 97/98 models but covers all years.

The fuel filter looks like a standard automotive in-line metal canned fuel filter. I don't know why one of those of the correct line size wouldn't work as a substitute.
