Court, I will be rebuilding an S2 from spare parts, and I wanted to check on the under gas tank. I heard that some were defective. what should I be looking for to make sure I have a good tank? I have two spares to pick from. rex |

Rex: There were 3 fuel cell related recalls. I **think** from your description the one you refer to is 95V116. Here's the scoop:
quote:Make / Models : Model/Build Years: BUELL / S2 THUNDERBOLT 1995 Recall Number: 95V116000 Summary: FUEL SEEPAGE CAN OCCUR AT THE MOLD PARTING LINE OR AT THE AREA WHERE THE PETCOCK ATTACHES TO THE FUEL TANK. Consequence: FUEL LEAKS COULD RESULT IN A FIRE IF AN IGNITION SOURCE IS PRESENT. Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE AND REPLACE THE FUEL TANKS ON THE INVOLVED MOTORCYCLES. Notes: SYSTEM: FUEL. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTORCYCLES. NOTE: OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME, SHOULD CONTACT BUELL AT 1-414-935-8400. ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-800-424-9393.
If. . . a HUGE if. . . I recall correctly there were no problems, just the possibility of a problem. The drill was that dealers were provided with a new TESTED tank, replaced the one on the bike, sent in the tank they took off, it got tested (pressurized and dunked in water) and checked, marked and sent to a dealer . . repeat process. There was some sort of a mark put on the tanks that were tested. In your case:
- examine the tank closely for any areas of physical concerns (i.e. cracking) - DO NOT DO THIS WITH A FLAME!
- Check with your Authorized Buell Dealer and see if the recall was done.
I'm thinking that, in your case, the tank is not necessarily associated with the bike so you're gonna be doing the test yourself. Pick up some bubbles . . . Pressurize the tank and paint the seems with the bubble fluid. (If you have any bubble stuff left over you have my address, right? I totally love that crap) That's it in a nutshell. Answer your question? Here's the correspondence to and from from Buell to the Feds that sheds a bit more light. This one to me was not very worrysome. Court (I can see why the folks in Milwaukee hate me. . . . )

How much pressure are we talking about here? I picked up a spare tank from Sauk City Buell/H-D a few years ago, might have to test it if I ever put it to use someday. |

| bar | 0.345 | atmosphere | 0.340 | Pascal | 3.45e+4 | torr (mmHg) | 259 | mm water | 3.52e+3 | m water | 3.52 | kg/cm2 | 0.352 | pound per square feet | 720 | pound per square inch | 5.00 | How the hell should I know ? ? ? . . . dip the bubble wand in the bubble fluid . . blow gently and see what it takes to make a bubble. Add 12% to that and apply that amount of positive pressure to the tank . . . frankly, I doubt it much matters . . so I'll leave it at "just enough". Can you tell I am doing homework?

Thanks. So, I will use slightly more than a puff and a bit less than a full blow, got it. (sure hope nobody looks in the garage while I'm doing this) |

The tanks that were installed on my bikes after the recall had a number etched in them on the petcock boss facing out...The number was not all the same it may have been sequential but I am not sure.. My prerecall tanks did not have this so I have always used it as a way to determine pre and post recall tanks.... |
