I cleaned and oiled my filter a few months back, but not before it was showing a "dry" spot at the top. Now it's looking dry again. Do I need to coat it heavier? Should I expect a few maintenance coats here and there until the next cleaning is due? It's not that cleaning is all that hard, but I'd like to flush any more oil than necessary down the drain...

You could just hit the dry spots with the spray-on oil, as needed. I have K&N on car, pickup, and M2.

When running the breather setup that came with mine,
I found that the babysnot from the engine would wash out the red oil pretty quick.
Also, rain will rinse it out nicely.
The rain sock thing helps a bit.
