I've been having an issue with my "new" S1W fuel tank - every time I popped the fuel cap, it sprayed fuel because the vent wasn't...well, venting.

I swapped it with the one from my old tank (which had no problems other than paint leprosy) and it seems fine now, but I was curious - is there a "proper" position for the side mounted vent opening inside the tank? There's the vent in the bottom of the little vent bowl, right in the middle, and there's one on the side towards the top of the bowl. It seemed the top fitting would only snug down with the bowl in one position so I guess it doesn't really matter, but academic curiosity got the best of me.

S1 bikes have a different setup than a X1s?
Nothing you describe sounds familiar to me.

An X1 may have a different setup...does your bike have a little aluminum periscope sticking up thru the fuel filler ring, with a breather hose attached to it? If it does, there are 2 pieces to it:

The aluminum periscope on top with an 18mm hex at the base

A plastic rollover valve inside the tank. The valve sticks up thru the filler ring and threads into the periscope; there's an O-ring on top of the filler ring to prevent any fluid leaks. Its this plastic valve I'm curious about.

An EFI bike may have a different setup...both my bikes (S1 and S2) have the same thing though.

Rat sounds just like the x1 valve.
I think that the answer is yes. I am at work (not working) so fsm is not handy

Yeah that's the ticket....
Just remove or cut off the offending part that has malfunctioned. Sorry but this part is for your safety. It keeps gas from spilling out if the bike goes down on it's side. Have you ever tried to put out gas that has ignited and is burning freely?
You just slid through it and now it's about burn you up!

Sorry for the vent but I had a friend suffer a really bad burn as a kid and I would hate to see anyone else go through that kind of pain over a 25 cent part....

It's very easy to take that little valve out.
Just reach in to hold the ball valve thing and unscrew the periscope thing.
(don't drop it in the tank!)
You could blow through it to see if it's blocked.
Maybe the hose is blocked somewhere along the line?
can you blow through the hose OK?

I can blow thru it most times. Sometimes I have to rattle it first. Seems to be "engaging" more often than it should...

Since swapping in the valve from my old tank, no more problems - and I've run a couple hundred miles the last day or so trying to use up some crappy gas.

when I converted from fuel injection to Carb on my 99 S3 I eliminated that bulb check valve from inside the tank to a small in line check valve external to the tank.
