I'm new to V-Twins....So on my newly acquired 2001 S3 (new to me), I have dained the oil from the tank via the "tube" and drained the case via the drain plug. Is there any other lubrication I need to drain and change? Hey, like I said I am new....Thanks! |

Thats about it. Make sure you use sport trans fluid in the primary/ transmission. They really don't recommend synthetic oil. Also don't overfill the oil tank you will blow oil all over. |

Remember I'm new. Primary vs Transmission? I have a manual in the mail. Would you mind explaining how to drain/fill each? Does the oil tank fill the Prime or Tranny? |

Robert, you must fill the primary/transmission from the derby/clutch cover or the primary chain inspection hole if you have a good funnel with flexible hose.It needs 3/4 of a quart. And you can use synthetic in your trans with no problems. I have used it in my S-2 with over 70,000 miles with no problems. HD/Buell now recommend their Syn-3 in everything. Your oil tank only holds engine oil. |

Thanks all. So does the drain plug on the bottom of the case drain the primary and tranny? |

Yes - the REAR plug drains the primary. The forward bolt adjusts the tensioner. |

I'm with Numb - Sport-Trans for the gears, it is made specifically for tubes/sporty's. They may recommend Syn3, but no bulletin has been issued regarding it and your owners manual insists on Sport-Trans, not just recommends. Not to imply that you can't use syn's for gears. Any good quality syn is good for the motor. Most guys seem to go w/ either Syn3 or Mobil 1. The motor oil drains from the hose near the pass peg on left side. The tranny drains thru the plug under the bike near the shifter. At least thats how it is on an X1. |

It says on the Buell website that SYN3 is certified for use in the primary/transmissions of all Buells models. http://www.buell.com/en_us/gear/accessories/Produc t.asp?Menu_ID=2&ProductLineID=6&CategoryID=1&Produ ctID=4101 Sport-trans is good stuff, I still use some I bought in bulk years ago, but it's no longer available at a dealership near me. |

Dude -- get a Factory Service Manual and a torque wrench. You shouldn't be doing maintenance on it without them -- especially if you're new to the air cooled / dry sump engine scene. Use any motor oil that meets the approriate API - C and vis. rating for the engine. Use any oil that the oil mfg. recommends for the tranny. |
