I have a 1999 X1 blue race stripe with the race kit. For the first 5 years, the county I live in did not require an emissions test to register the bike but at 6 years old a test is required every year. For the third time now, the bike has failed the emissions test. The first 2 years it failed I took it to the dealer where I bought it and they installed a stock EMC, took it to the emissions test station, the bike passed the test and then they’d reinstall the race EMC. It’s now failed for the 3rd year and I’m trying to figure out what I can do to temporarily get through the emissions test without involving the dealer. The bike passes the hydrocarbons test but fails on carbon monoxide. The standard for CO is 5.50% and I’m getting 6.47%. One solution I’m considering is to add a small amount of methanol (99.85%) into the gas. I’ve seen it work on cars that don’t pass but I’m not so sure I want to try it on the bike. If any of you have any thoughts or experience with this I’d appreciate any guidance you can give me. Thanks in advance.

I believe, if you haven't messed with your TPS, you can just swap your stock ECM back in without going to the dealer. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The stock ECM(that came off of YOUR bike) will work fine with no changes.
As far as the methanol goes, not a big deal on a carb'ed bike. But it should drive your FI system crazy.IMO...........Charlie

I think an auto parts store may have a fuel additive that is supposed to help get cars passed in these tests. Dont know what its called but maybe try someone there. I did it for a truck years ago and it did work.

Where do you live that requires motorcycles to pass smog tests?

Denatured alcohol will work wonders to pass emissions. Make the total fuel about 15% denatured alcohol and it will pass.

And yes there is no reason to involve the dealer when swapping ECM's both have been set to your TPS allready, its will be simple plug and play.

I live in Maricopa County, Arizona which is where Phoenix and surrounding cities (Tempe, Mesa, Glendale, Peoria, Scottsdale, etc.) are. I may be wrong on this but I've heard that this is the only county in the country that requires an emissions test for motorcycles. I didn't realize that the stock ECM could simply be swapped back in without adjusting the TPS (which I haven't messed with). Also, I appreciate the suggestion of the 15% alcohol mixture. That takes the mystery out of how much to use. I'll let you all know how it goes. Thank you for the responses and help.
