I have a 2000 M2 and after a longer ride the tranny started shifting hard. When I got back it was really hard to find nuetral, and it was shifting down hard. Now when the bike is in nuetral the light doesnt come on and barely gets out of N. Any ideas? Ive called a few places and some think it could be the shift fork. |

Bah...Sounds like that stupid little C-clip fell off your shift drum. It's really easy to repair, or pricey to actually fix. I say repair, in that putting the clip in wont fix the problem as it will more than likely fall off again. To actually fix, I would buy the Banke smooth shift kit and be done with it. I've had the tranny out of mine more times than I would like to remember. If you decide to tackle this on your own, feel free to pm me as many questions as you have. |

What kind of a job is it to fix this. Between me and my dad we are both fairly mechanically inclined but there are a few things (trannys...) that we are a little hesistent to touch. |

I would recommend the Baker smooth shift kit (American Sportbike). That designed to fail C-clip is your culprit. Plus the metal pins on the stock drum have a nasty habit of working their way out and pushing against the detent plate cocking it at an odd angle. The Baker kit is a much better design elliminating all these problems. |

Start simple - primary fluid level & chain adjustment. If either is off, shifting becomes hard or impossible. If they're OK, you should look at the tranny. Nice thing about a tuber is it's a trapdoor tranny, so you can pull it without splitting the cases. Step one: BUY A MANUAL. The KV is great, but nothing beats a good ol' black n white book in your hands None of it is too hard, just gets time consuming and you have to keep good track of your parts as you disassemble. |

Once you get the manual and gather the tools you'll need, you'll be surprised how easy it is to work on that transmission. The Baker kit also makes the transmission throws equal. Be aware you'll have to do a little grinding on the shift-pawl to clear the Baker detent-plate (if you get one). It's not a big deal to do, but it's a big deal if you don't do it. |

When my S3 neutral light got wonky and I had difficulty shifting, two things had taken place. The pins on the shift drum worked out and cocked the detent plate but the c-clip hung in there. However the c-clip which holds on the detent roller popped off and it and the roller were skipping around in the primary until they hit the bottom. The Baker kit(pricey) eliminated the problem and a couple of bucks at Harley. Between me and Billfish we've garnered enough tools to do the job twice so far. I've got two other Buells that have yet to develope the problem. Buy or borrow what ever it takes to do the job properly and be satisfied making the bike better than new. SteveH |

Has anyone tried to copy the Baker design and use the original shift drum? Granted you might need a machinist to do it, but it might be something to look into. (hehehe...speaking of "wonky" I meant Baker and not Banke on my original post) |

My tranny started to act like that when my clutch cable was about to snap. Check the cable up near the lever end. Mine was down to literally ONE strand. |

Has anyone tried to copy the Baker design and use the original shift drum? Yeah... I remember someone posting a thread about it years ago. It's archived somewhere for sure. If you have a drill press and a tap, I believe you could do it yourself. The Baker kit was pricey, but it did turn my transmission into a pretty slick shifter. Maybe it was the shift-pawl readjustment when I installed it, but I very rarely miss gears like I use too. |

alright I ordered a manual but in the time being I want to just take a look at the tranny. Can anyone give me a few directions to getting to the tranny. thanks alot |

You guys were right on. The clip fell out and the detent plate needed replacing. Nothing to serious. |
