I have a 2000 S3 that has had a lot of piddly problems related to the injection that have been hard to trouble shoot -- as a matter of fact the bike is at the dealer as we speak. Has anyone scrapped the injection and went back to a carb? What is involved and if you have made the switch -- was it worth it?

Ryker 77 did it
I think Chasespeed did it for a while.

big list
remove fuel pump from tank
install petcock
get ignition module
get carbed intake manifold
get carb
re wire ignition LV side
re jet

the petcock install seems to have been the most problematic for those that have done it.

My x1 is still FI running a race ECM I have the soft ware so the system is a non issue now.

I'm going thru this right now. i have a 99 S3 that the dealer couln't fix. I bought a carb an intake on ebay for $90.00. Direct install. I read somewhere in the archives someone had already done this conversion by gutting the fuel pump and putting a in line shut off valve. That way you keep the low fuel light. I haven't got that far yet. I'm using crane HI 4 ignition and coil. Forget about the stock wiring and unplugging the engine light. The throttle cables seem like they will work fine with a cv carb anyway. The big problem is putting in a petcock if you have to go that way. I know how to do it, but you have to fill the hole where the fuel pump wiring comes thru the tank..

I did this conversion on my 00 S3 last year, it was pretty straight forward. I even left my stock ignition as per some other post on this board. I did get Lucky and find a carbed fuel tank of the same color. I didn't cut any of the FI wiring, I just unplugged everything bagged and tied them to the harness under the tank. This change has been great ever since day one.

Blks1 you were able to leave the stock ignition in place? With no trouble? I was thinking the pcm would not function properly unless it was all there.

You can't leave the stock ignition in place since the ECU does the fuel as well as the ignition.
It would probably be most easy if you just go aftermarket for the ignition.

I did the conversion on my M2 Cyclone. It's a Frankenstein bike [made up from parts like Frankenstein's Monster]and I had an X1 FI system and wiring harness. I switched out the tank and it now has an M2 fuel system with a Keihin CV40 carb with a Buell/Sportie intake manifold. I installed a Crane HI4 ignition system and spliced it into the X1 wiring harness. All the old FI parts were removed and the wires tied off. Since the initial troubleshooting it's been running quite well with no electrical problems. When I upgrade my system I intend to install hotter cams and a Mikuni HRS40 carb. You can convert the old fuel injection tanks over to a petcock but I would suggest you check on Ebay or at swap meets for a carb tank before doing that.

Yes, I did leave the stock ignition on my bike when I did the conversion. I have the race ECM, and have not had a single issue with the bike since the conversion. When I did the research on doing this I had info. from another Badwebber who left his stock ignition on as well. I did not use the VOES option that you can use on a non-fuel injected ignition.

I did install a VOES switch. There is a circuit on the Crane HI-4 wiring that hooks up directly to the VOES switch.

Bob,

What types of problems does yours have? My '99 wasn't too happy with the stock ecm but once I switched to the race ecm it ran much better.

Every once in awhile it will hiccup on the hiway but other than that, until I recently lost an injector, it has been fine for 62,000mi.

I think my injector is sticking and I don't get any codes because of it. I went through the troubleshooting and finally swapped the injectors after I determined it was the front one that was acting up. When the problem swapped with the injector swap I knew I figured it out.

The best part about working through the problems is that I learned a little more about my bike and also cleaned and greased any connector that I had opened.

Some people and shops will just start changing parts until they fix it. I like to try to figure it out first.

I MADE THE SWITCH WHEN I BUILT THE 88". I'VE GONE BOTH WAYS, LEFT THE X1 TANK AND TOOK THE SPRING OUT OF THE PRESSURE REGULATOR, (JUST LET IT PUMP, BUT NOT BUILD PRESSURE) PUT AN INLINE SHUT-OFF. I'M NOW LOOKING AT PLATIC WELDING THE PUMP OUTLET SHUT AND USING HARLEYS FI TO CARB ADAPTER NUT WITH A RUBBER WASHER TO MOVE THE PETCOCK TO THE CERTER REAR OF THE TANK. I ALSO HAVE TRIED A CARB TANK, BUT HE SEAT TO TANK AREA IS A PROBLEM. RUNNING A TWIN-TECH, PIGGYBACKED ONTO STOCK WIRING LOOM, 45MUKUNI WITH A SE MANIFOLD.

Did this last winter to my 99 S3. Second best thing I did to the bike. Pingle Petcock, HSR42, crane Hi-4 ignition and coil, carb style ignition pickup, CF air filter fit without mods, and bracket for enricher knob.
