Should the oil hole in lifters be facing the crank shaft or facing out when installed? Or... does it matter? Thanx |

If memory serves correctly... The oil feed passages come from the outside. |

How many RPMs does it take for oil to move up the pushrods? My rocker boxes are dry but I haven't taken the engine past idle yet... |

Are the tappets fully pumped-up yet? |

??? I've run the bike around the block but one doesn't seem to be. It''s the only thing I can think of that's causing the tapping sound from that pushrod. |

Okay, from the sounds of things... You arent either... Getting oil THROUGH the tappets, and up the push-rod... OR, The oil isnt getting TO the tappets... I would imagine its possible to collapse the lifter completely.... SO, where I would look... See if you can prime the oil pump witout running the engine, and start looking... If oil is getting TO the tappet area, the problem is probably the tappet itself... Could also be, you arent generating enough oil pressure.. Chase |

Clogged pushrod? Are the lifters new or reused? If new or dry, it may take them a while to pump up. When I rebuilt my Corvair which has hydraulic lifters, it took about a half hour of idling and slow running for all the lifters to quiet down. Horrendous racket until then though. |

Sparky... I'm hoping yours is the case I'm having. I finally broke down and dropped it off at the stealers. I fear a piece of metal from the holed piston may have gotten away from me case cleansing... |

not yet. They are backed up at the dealer. They gave me one of those looks when I told them I rebuilt the engine myself. I hope they're honest. |

I talked with one of our techs tonight, he had the same convo with the shop foreman a while back on an XL he was building. Word from that is, as long as they face the same direction as each other (i.e. all in or all out) you're OK. Looking at the oil path above though, I think I'm inclined to install my new ones (soaking now in a tub of Syn3) facing out. |

Can they be installed in either direction? Isn't there a flat for the lock pin? And the manual makes no mention of orientation so it must not be an issue. |

Oiling of the gear case can be effected by the wrong gasket is yours correct? |

From Shop Manual 99/00 Cyclone M2. (2000 Models)"Insert lifter into bore in crankcase with lifter oil hole facing towards the oil trough. Rotate lifter so that flats at upper end of lifter faces the front and rear of engine. If the lifter is installed incorrectly, anti-rotation screws cannot be inserted" (1999 Models)"Insert tappet into bore in crankcase. Rotate tappet so that flats at the upper end of tappet face the front and rear of the engine. If the tappet is installed incorrectly, pins cannot be inserted". |

What tappets are you using? A while back I replaced mine, the replacement ones from Harley and the stock replacement ones from Crane Cam both had the holes oriented 90 degrees from the original location. |

The stealer was no help at all... the guy didn't even tear it down before telling me what I needed. Rather than get screwed anymore than the initial 2 hours they're charging me for 15 minutes of work, I'll pick it back up from them this week. |

+1 for Seth. I just installed the new ones from HD, the holes are 90 degrees from the originals. |

It shouldn't matter which direction the oil holes are facing. If you look at the lifter, it has a groove around the circumference as a oil channel. Brian |
