When u hit the starter button I get a loud chattering/studdering sound like the starter is not engaging and the bike definitely won't start....so I charged the battery and check all the connections and all is well.....ride for awhile to work maybe 20mins and shut down for 8hrs come back and doing the chattering again but on the third try it turned over once and fired up. Seems like a crappy battery cause after charging it fires right up and rides AOK. When I measure the battery with a meter it reads 12.56V which my manual describes as 75% at 12.6?? Should this not be able to engage the starter and turn the bike over? I haven't tried it under the load test but gonna order a new battery anyways just wanted to know if anyone had this happen before....O YA it a 2000 X1. Tx af226 |

Bad ground? The strap to the frame seems to be a common problem. Check there. |

I am going to be known as the grounding guy soon. Like Easy Rider said, check the ground strap connection at the frame. Even if it is tight the washer inbetween can rust. I replaced mine with a stainless one. |

Before installing the cleaned bolt & new washer, apply some copper grease on the bolt. |

See what the voltage drops down to when you hit the starter button. |
