After the first time i took my x1 for a ride i noticed oil speckled on the tail section right at the y. i finally tracked it down to being on the inside bottom lip of a sportster style carbon oval intake. where is this oil coming from? do the rocker boxes have a vent line going into the filter? i havent taken the air filter apart, but where else would oil be getting into my filter from?

The oil is from the engine breathers. Crankcase gases (blow-by mixed with water vapor and oil mist - spooge) are directed to the intake to be re-burned in the combustion chamber. Sometimes the spooge makes it to the filter element and drips out.

Most of us have rerouted our breather lines into catch-cans. I also installed XB valve covers to clean up and simplify the breather routing.

There are tons of threads in the archives that address this very issue - check them out. My favorite is the guy who rerouted his breather lines to a tomato can hidden in his chin fairing.

I have the same issue on my S3 but since it isn't really a lot of oil I just wipe it off. If you take the air cleaner off and wipe away the excess oil once in a while them it really isn't an issue, at least for me....Otherwise go with the catch can

My S2 has a setup that includes one breather hose from each head, that goes into the airbox on either side of the carb throat. Inside the airbox, directly in front of the carb throat, the hoses meet each other and are joined with a "T" fitting. The third leg of the T points right into the carb throat and is no more than 1/4" outside the venturi ring. Works like a champ, I never get external drips. I may drill my S1W backing plate (currently has breather filter on unused passenger footpeg bracket) and put the same setup on there, it works so well.

wouldn't it be common sense not to run oil through a 4 stroke engine? i understand the emissions part of it, but im not worried about it and i dont live in CA. I personally would rather my engine not breath spooge

Do you have a catch-can in your car or truck? They've been required to have positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) since the 60's but not very many people go to the trouble of installing catch-cans on them (I did, however, on a bracket racing Camaro I have, but it still retains the vacuum PCV to the carb).

Scott_in_nh gets into the 11's with his near stock S3. If not having a catch-can is hurting him, I don't think he minds.

I made my catch mainly to clean up the installation of my Forcewinder. I spent less than $5, btw....
