Here in No. Cal. we have great roads. There are some excellent roads with hairpins that are all gravel. My M2 does not do well on that surface. It floats, really floats, and with any bump the rear tire has difficulty hooking up. My friends on sporties and softtails literally leave me in the dust. I take my other twins in the gravel and know how they should slide through the corners at about 50. But my M2 does not want to play.

Looking for suggestions on suspension set-up to get this more agreeable in the gravel.

Kessip:

Set your PRE-LOAD on rear shock for ONE INCH SAG ....

For front forks you can SHIM FRONT FORKS SPRINGS for ONE INCH SAG ...

COMPRESSION and REBOUND for front and rear shocks would be a personal feel ...

Do not know of any web sites to refer you to for SUSPENSION TUNING, maybe someone out in BUELLdom can help with this ???

Typically you want to soften your preload on gravel. I've found gradually going softer on both preload and compression can help out - fiddle a bit and see how it goes.

I think part of the difference might be the 19" wheels and narrower tires on the front of the Sportsters and Softtails.

I had an M2 for a while, now have a Dyna FXD, and definitely feel like the Dyna can be crossed up a little under power whereas the M2 never gave me the same feeling on the same roads.

I think you should be catching up on the straights with the M2's extra HP. :>;)

Your wide rear tire is holding you back.
The gravel will act more like ball-bearings.
My '79 sportster loved dirt roads and gravel bit my X1 not so much.

nate, your correct, the wider rear tire makes the bike "float" on the dirt, rather than dig down and drive...
