I'm looking for some input on my oil/tranny products. First off I don't live close to the dealer and this is the first service outside of there doors. I want to change the fluids myself. I live in Northern Canada and have limited access to products. What I can get is Mobil 1 SuperSyn VTwin 20W-50...Is this ok in the two holes? The other is AmSoil Synthetic 10w-40, after that its all regular products....I'm leaning towards the Mobil 1 product cause its for VTwins? Any help is appreciated. Right now I have quality 10W-40 regular oil in the motor and HD tranny form the dealer...the bike has 13000km's |

Avoid synthetic gear box oils in the primary and tranny, it is believed that they may promote stator / rotor glue failures as they have "varnish" fighting properties, the moco says their magic motor elixer ( syn3) can be used in both holes, so if oil avaialbility is an issue the synthetic "should be ok", you know that you can order it from any of our board sponsors and have it shipped to you?? unless there are regs against shipping it over land? YMMV .. |

OK I'm confused...the primary and tranny are two different things but share the same fluid behind the primary cover? HD uses synthetic in here right? Is there something I missing? There is oil in the motor and oil in the primary on the clutch side on the bottom? Is there a third place cause my service manual reads and looks like the primary and transmission fluid are one in the same? Help me out? Or am I stund. |

Tranny, clutch and primary share fluid. Engine oil is separate. I use M1 20w/50 v-twin in both holes. |

Thanks, needed that. I was freaking out a little. I get confused easily. Gonna try the Mobil 1 20w-50 VTwin in both holes. |

There are NO PROBLEMS in using synthetics in your bike. In fact, it would be recommended. Where people get this idea confuses me... There are reported problems with some GL-5 gear oils, but if you're not sure what type of oil to use then send an email to the oil mfg. to see what they recommend. Or visit their website. I use Mobil1 engine oil 15w-50 in both the transmission and engine. Works GREAT. Just follow the recommendations in the owners manual!!! |
