So, I am in desperate need of a new rear. My 2000 M2 already as the chain conversion kit on it. The wheels are stock. This is the story, I can get free tires through a friends sponsor but the problem is that the only tires on his approved list are 190 and 200 series tires. Funds are really tight for me right now, my emergency fund has been drained. Student loans are absolutely killing me. So, has anybody put a 190 or 200 on the rear of a stock M2? I'm hoping this will work out or it may end my riding for a while. My main concern is it safe? Is this going to look funny on a stock rim when a 180 belongs there? | ||

if you have the pm's, i'd say yes, if cast rims, dont do it. | ||

I have 180s on PMs and the belt is really close to the tire. 190s are not any wider so they should work just fine, but I'd guess that 200s would rub. | ||

I ran a 180 on mine and switched back to a 170. I found the fatter tire makes the bike more difficult to lean in the turns. FYI - If you have stock rims, a 190 might not fit but it might on a PM rim as the PM rims ar .5 inches wider | ||

Remember....handling is adversely affected by going to a wider tire.The "Bling Bling" factor isn't worth the poor handling. oops,sorry "Koz"..you already answered to poor handling....+1 (Message edited by ducxl on June 06, 2007) | ||

the bling factor might not be worth the poorer handling, but the free tires might... not to mention we dont know how he rides.. i personaly think it will be ok with a 190 if he has pm rims... if not, ur done..... | ||

Do you have any other friends that ride a stock 180+? Maybe you can work out a deal with on of them. You could sell or trade the larger tire to get the proper size replacement. | ||

I run a 180 and can tell no difference betweeen it and stock (170) looks better though. | ||

"190s are not any wider (than a 180)" Uh dude, by definition they are 10mm (~0.4") wider. The "180", "190", and "200" refer to the nominal width of the tire. If you have the PM rims and room via chain conversion to accommodate the wider 190 series tire, it should work okay in a pinch like you are having to deal with. I wouldn't go to a 200 series though. One series larger than the rim width supports per the tire manufacturer would be my limit. I've run on the track with a 180 series on my 5" wide stock M2 rims. Set my personal best lap time with that tire. Even after draging the tail section--yes, I low-sided--the tire still had chicken strips. | ||

OK, now that you got an answer, can I hijack the thread? I am seriously considering going the *other* way. My 9sx comes with 180 series Pirelli Scorpion Syncs. I can drag pegs, and still not come to the edge of that tire. What would be the effect of putting on 170 series tires? I'll take "better handling" over "looks cool" any day. I am wondering if the 9sx rims were really supposed to be 170 rims, but they put 180 tires on 'em to keep the bench racers from whining. I had a hard time telling the difference between 170's and 180's on my M2... but they were always different brands. The difference between a 170 and 180 felt much less significant then the difference between... say... a metzler and a dunlop. | ||

I'm sure a someone could probably feel a difference... ... that being said, I never noticed a damn thing when I replaced my 170 205 with a 180 205 on my 5" wide rim (except my chicken strips were unreachable). | ||

The bling factor isn't in consideration, I just wanted to ride safe. My rims are stock and not the PM version. From this thread and some searching on the board it sounds like people have run a 180 fine but the 190 doesn't sound good. I understand why, getting some weird tire profile from the wider tire. Not sure what to do, I am definitely in no position to splurge on a tire. In the last month I had to replace every appliance I own, put a new roof on the house and garage and also had to put new brakes and tires on my truck. Bad string of luck I guess. Anybody out there want to donate a tire??? | ||

Bill The good thing about not getting to the edge of the tire is that you have a full contact patch per lean angle. Joe | ||

Bill, Mounting up a tire that is wider than specified for the rim squeezes the tire profile making it easier to lean the bike over. The opposite is true for putting a narrower than specified tire on a wider rim, it flattens out the tire profile tending to make it more resistant to leaning over. It wouldn't likely be any worse than the difference you feel between a rear tire that is well-worn in its center/highway portion versus a new tire. So I doubt you'd notice it on the street other than being able to scrub off all chicken strips more easily, but you won't notice any improvement either. If you are interested in working with how your CityX handles, there are other adjustments you might want to consider before trying a 170 series rear tire. | ||

Sickquad, If you look in back of a current Motorcycle magazine like Cycle World, you'll see advertisements for tires. They offer some very low sport bike tire prices especially on the off brands, like the Chinese Chen-Shin and those Taiwanese tires too. Be sure to consider shipping. Another alternative is to head to your local road race track and look for a good set of DOT take-offs, just don't run them in the wet, they are very slippery in the wet. |
