Hi there....I am in the process of tearing down my engine and I am about to start on the front cylinder. Now I know I need to support the engine before I remove the front cylinder head. Any body out there have a good method for holding the engine up? I am pondering now to figure something out. I thought of using racheting style straps around the entire engine and then up over the frame. Just curious to hear all your ideas. Thanks, Mike |

We just tore mine down ... twice ... A bottle jack, or similar (small car scissor type jack) under the front left (opposite side of the shock) of the crankcase is what we did ... there is a flat spot there that allows for this... and yes - it's safe to do. |

Dug up a couple pics from the rebuild with the XB cylinders in place ... gives you an idea of what I am talking about.

i have used straps like you suggested, allows you to adjust the engine up and down and still be able to roll the bike around the garage. |

small cargo straps -- just like you use to transport the bike on a trailer. |

I used a bottle jack like mention above to support it..Then used a ratchet strap around the frame and around the front engine stabilizer rod...Worked well... When you reassemble, get some NEW grade 9 plus bolts for the top motor mount to head ..RE: Don Casto's article. HB |

I just pull the frame off the motor completely. I hate working around the frame. |

Here's a stand I made for working on my project.

Great ideas guys! I use a pallet jack with a board across the pallet jack forks for under the engine. Can still move the bike around. Allows for easily moving the motor up and down in the frame. Really like the above engine stand though. How much for one? |
