Does anyone know how long the packing in the vance & hines muffler lasts? How do you know if it needs to be repacked? Thanks |

if the sound gets less throaty and more pingy, that is usually a good indication. repacking will make the bike fell much better when it is done as well. i would guess around 15k miles??? i think al sells some repacking that is nearly lifetime.... (Message edited by sleez on May 29, 2007) |

My muffler (SS2R, 98 S1W) is really LOUD right now. I had a rattle in there so when I opened it up to replace the baffle screw that had come loose I noticed the packing was laying loose in the bottom. So, I pulled it out. Sounds great to me - more like a big block musclecar with headers - and seems to perform better. I dunno...maybe my bike was a hair on the rich side before, and the added flow just equaled the mixture out.... I'm still considering a Force setup for it, but want to hear one first. But the packing was just a couple pieces of fiberglass, nothing real technical there. It looked like the loose baffle bolt let the baffle move around too much, and it just cut the top and bottom out of the packing against the can casing. I've been wondering if you put an open wrap (i.e. gaps between the wraps) of header wrap material on there, would that work the same way? Or would it strangle the bike? One of the factory guys told me this weekend (he was in town for Summit Point) that I should put on a race header and muffler...I dared him to find me one and I'd be more than happy to install it (Message edited by ratbuell on May 29, 2007) |

I would rethink running your V&H without packing. I was always under the impression that the packing also helps cut down on vibration, thus saving you a broken can. YMMV... |

they run much better with packing, you'll pick up quite a bit on the bottom. |

When I bought my S2, it had the SSR2. The little end tube that deflects the exauhst from the tire was loose so I opened it up to fix it. I noticed absolutley nothing in the can, so I fixed the end piece and screwed it shut. The question is, what can I do to fix the repacking issue if there is nothing on the inside of the can? What should I do? I must admit, it does sound nice. |
