I have se575 cams and have herd that a cam swap can give you more cam gear noise ..is this true and if so how much noise can can be expected? or is there another problem? thanks |

Cam gear noise can be directly connected to gear alignment, valvespring pressure, cam bearing tension....there's a ton of variables. The higher your lift, the more load is put on your cam gears...so yes, you can get more cam gear sound. I run stock cams in both my S1W and S2...but when I upped the cam in my Evo FLH, I noticed a lot more valvetrain noise. Not cam gear noise, but more rocker arm clickclickclick. Given that I went to a .579" lift cam, I'm not surprised... I guess if you hear a "whirrrr", don't sweat it. If you hear "whirrrrrr....clunk" - check it out. |

Ratbuell!! IF you hear clicking from the rocker boxes after putting in a set of high lift cams you have the rockers tapping on the rocker box covers and they are going to crack! Probably already have! Higher lift cams are noisier. Its caused by the increased backlash of the gears with the added spring pressure. (Assuming you put in stiffer springs to go with the cams.) However, the cam case has to be clearanced to allow the lobes space to rotate. At 575, I think its compulsory. |

I run a set of .630 lift cams with oversize stainless valves, and Zippers 625 springs along with some other go-fast goodies. This thing is noisy! When I first got it together and tuned in I thought I was having major issues. i knew that the valve train would be louder, but wasn't expecting that much, now it has become normal compared to when it was stock. Runs like a raped ape, but like Ratbuell said, if it doesn't sound right to you, check it out!!! |
