I am interested in changing my gearing slightly by switching out the stock secondary drive pulley with a lighter Belt Drive Limited pulley. The problem is that when the BDL pulley is mounted to the output shaft of the transmission there is 0.22" of space between the nut and the pulley. I have contacted www.American-made.com and asked installation info but I have received no reply. It appears as though I need a spacer to be fitted between the pulley and the nut. In other words, the splined portion of the pulley is narrower than the stock pulley and something must be done for a proper install. Anyone try these or have any recommendations?

I have these in 29 tooth on my S3. I don't remember a problem with mounting these pulleys. But the cases are at zippers for 88" mods and piston oiler mods. I will check the S1 to see if I have the BDL light weight pulley there in the morning when I get home.

Joe,

Thanks for the reply. I have begun machining a spacer to allow the nut to actually apply pressure to the BDL pulley. All other dimensions appear to be correct. The thinner splined section of the BDL pulley leaves about 1/4" of exposed splines when fully installed.

The BDL kit appears to be complete. It included the pulley, a new seal, the spacer that is located between the transmission and the pulley, a new nut, the locking plate, and two machine screws. Either a second spacer is required or I am really missing something.

They may have given you an incorrect part.I just put a 26 tooth on my S-2 and no spacer.Splines should be the same width.

Jim,

If I look up their choices on-line all I see that could work are pulleys for 1991 - Up Sportster. All other options are for the big twins. The image on-line appears to be somewhat narrow at the splines (for what it is worth). Did I somehow order the wrong part?
