I guess half a degree can make a half an inch(12.7mm) difference. Of course it seems like my wheel base would be shorter, so maybe using the XB's shorter forks and possibly different angled triples allowed for the 1" difference. Plus my tape measure hasn't been calibrated in, well never. Using some theoretical numbers(my bike is in a box) it works out to be 3.6" for the trail on my bike and 3.8" on yours Jodie. I'm not sure of your fork length, but it doesn't seem to make any difference in the calc. |

Here are some pictures to gain some opinion's good/bad or otherwise... I've had this old S1 rear hugger for some time and thought I'd do a little mod to it to see what it would look like, I kind of like it... I also fitted my old X1 head light to also see what it would look like...I like it too plus it would save me some cash with the mod's. Anyway here they are. Be gentle! |

Jodie-looking good the fender looks MotoGP(Hayden) esque. I've never been a fan of the buell turnsigs though. To close to the seat. Mine for a couple of years were held together with broken hacksaw blades and electricians tape as me or my wife would always hit them with our foot upon dismount. Cool spot for the reservoir! The only problem I am seeing with having it there would be my chain, if I break it, it could cut the hose, but you have a belt so not much to worry about there. It is bothering me a bit so I may fashion a guard, even though that would probably be the best thing it could go through if it went through anything. Nice vid. makes me miss my buell... |

Corey don't you mean that Haydens bike is very Buell like? Looks like Honda has taken a Buell idea! |

I don't think the reservoir will stay there I only put it in that position just to get it out of the way, I may get a shorter hose made then get the shock re-gassed. |

I like mine down there as it cleans up the back end, since I don't have any plastic or electronics back there I'm trying to keep as much stuff from being placed underneath the seat as possible. Getting the hose shortened and the shock regassed is a possibility but I'll probably just keep it as is... |

You're asking for opinions so here's mine... The front looks great. I'm personally a fan of the round headlight and small fairing from the S1/X1 era. Ditch the rear S1 hugger in favor of the XB stubby style. These old S1 huggers have always looked bulky. One other thing...if you don't need the passenger space, I'd ditch the twin tail and footpeg mounts. BTW....great looking project!!! |

OK, supmin's been bugging me about this project since about half-way through -- could put my finger on it, but I think I've finally figured it out . . . this is NOT a home brew project -- and Joe isn't just some Bueller that was left unsupervised over the winter -- this bike is clearly an early prototype for XB running gear (wheels and suspension units) that were being tested on a tuber frame to fget early test results, and Joe is obviously (in spite of his clever insistance that he's just a guy from Oz) is a Buell Prototype builder wow -- it all makes sense now! seriously, Joe -- this thing is awesome -- well done, indeed! |

I kind of had my doubts whether the results would be worth the effort, but it looks like it's coming together quite nicely. I think it looks great exactly the way you built it... I love the disparate styling cues from the different models and how they seem to flow with each other. You obvioulsy have a great aptitude for this kind of work. |

Thanks for the comments. In case you haven't noticed I've used all Buell parts bar the bits I have fabricated. To try and make it as factory looking as possible. I've always liked the twin tail setup as I'm 6'5" tall I can move around a little more. I'd still like to see the S1 solo seat on there but because of the longer wheel base it may not look right. Bomber thanks I've been modifying stuff for as long as I can remember, which my Dad keeps reminding of! I like the S1 hugger idea as it would keep a lot of crap from going over the rear shock/battery etc. I could close it all in but I do like the look with all of the shock etc visible. Thanks again Jodie |

I like the S1 hugger, unmodified like you've got it. But then I'm funny that way, I really like the European version of the helmholtz airbox too. Wish I could figure a way to put that S1 subfender on the new tuber swingarm (I know duct tape would work but I'm not that desperate...) |

Nice job. Cut down the rear finder. Smaller turn signals. Clear leans with red Leds in a 1157 socket. Just personal preferences. Still niccccee. Joe |

I think you guys are working yourselves over for next to nothing-ok,it can be done.If youre really interested in mass-centralization why not put the oil tank under the engine-where it belongs.Give it a triangular shape so you don`t grind in the corners and put that virtually weightless muffler anywhere you want.I do like the shock relocation though,Vincent did it fifty or sixty years ago and it was a great idea then as now. |

i see that you took the suggestion of some of the other people about your rear end.looking better since the last time i popped in joesbuell but either way it would have looked great cause i know i could have never done that. have you checked to see how long those plastic ties will last before you test ride it and are they covered under warranty. |

Jim there is still quite a bit to do. The List; XB front guard Disc,Caliper and brake line Motogadget speedo XB oil cooler and cover 135T belt oil lines and fittings front fork seals paint body work powder coat frame rear tyre oil & filter Clutch Thats about it Phew! Neil thank you I still like the S1 hugger but also like the minimalist rear too. Maybe Buell will include some zip ties in the tool kit on future models |

definitely a kick a$$ bike reguardless what you have above the rear tire. whens the ETR(estimated time of ridability) and they do provide you with a small braded cable for some reason in the new tool pouches. haven't tried to look what that was for yet. |

joesbuell or ceejay, i was wondering if you guys could help me with a couple measurements for my project? you may already have them some place.. on your xb swing arm.. from axle to pivot point, from pivot point to shock attachment, from shock attachment to axle.. it should look like a triangle.. thanks.. it will help me with my calculations,,, he, he, he... aaron.. |

Aaron I will get it for you next time in the shed. I never measured this before as if you look in the archives I made a stand that bolted to my engine to maintain the standard ride height. So that once the swingarm was mounted basically were the top of the shock was is were I made the mount(Just clearing the rear cylinder) I then drilled an extra mount hole so I can raise the ride height a little. I believe mine a Corey's measurement will be different as Corey went for a raised ride height. Jodie |

well now I'm curious!!! Gonna flip the swingarm or make something similar to wilburs type? If I give you the numbers will you tell me all number taken in middle of shock center to center, shock mount to swingarm pivot-10", swingarm pivot to axle-18 5/8", and axle to shock mount-14 3/8". Hope that helps. Looking good Jodie, I'm hoping to have my frame, swingarm, forks ready for finishing this weekend, maybe |

That's kind of how I got onto this idea, wanted to raise my ride height, so I started looking around, and everything was way too expensive, I have about half of what they wanted in doing this type of conversion, plus it allowed me to change my seat which was another thing I was after, since I didn't like the looks of the M2 tail section(they always looked to be an afterthought-like they didn't fit the bike) and the S1 was just too uncomfortable after an hour-I tried it for about three months and finally said screw it. I borrowed a bit(even stole) from someone elses idea though-Thanks Jodie! The above number would be if you ran an imaginary triangle through the middle of the swingarm-It doesn't look to read that way but I hope it comes out right... PM sent. |
