If they were removed for recall, are they worth anything, or not worth messing with? Can they be rebuilt like the aftermarket Works shocks? What, exactly, was the "failure" that prompted the recalls anyway?

If memory serves . . .and sometimes with all this gray hair it does not . . .the original WP shocks (those with the external springs) began to show a failure mode during testing and/race exposure. I seem to recall that the center shaft was fracturing. Further questionable recall indicates that there never was a regular rider failure during regular road use . . .unlike the Showa shocks that replaced the WP

YMMV . . .and always consider the source . .

Right, sorry. WP. Doncasto - at least you have graying hair. Mine (thanks, mom) seems to be deserting me.

I remember the preload bolts would break if not tightened evenly.

Never was a "real" documented case of failure--I kept mine. THey can be rebuilt by any reputable suspension shop and are well worth keeping----but IIRC they were oversprung so check spring rates are correct for you.

I can remember one case in the UK where a WP shock eye fractured at the front of the shock and caused a crash on a two up S3. That would be about 1998 IIRC.
