should i replace this as long as i have the heads off already, and should i clean the tops of my pistons and cc's on my heads? is there a good easy way to do this? |

no not that i recall, but they are stock so i think that they need to be replaced are some better than others as far as brand goes? or do i get these over the hd parts counter? |

COMECTICUT No, thats a place up North. I believe what our friend Chase is reffering to is Cometic. And yes, they are very good gaskets. |

You know, of course, that you'll need to replace the rings, hone the jugs, etc. if you pull off the barrels from the pistons? At least that's been the info that I've been working with for the last jillion years or so. I might be mistaken here, but I'm pretty sure it's not good to just re-compress the rings into the used cylinder and hope they seal back like they were. I think you're asking for trouble there. If you do pull the jugs, when you get them up high enough that they are clear of the cases, carefully put some CLEAN rags around the rods, covering the opening. Be sure the area around the bottom of the barrels is as clean as possible before you start the disassembly. My 2 cents. AL |

I recommend using a fresh roll of heavy Saran (Plastic) wrap or plastic garbage bags cut to size. Their clean and the static electricity on them holds dust & dirt that's floating in the garage. Rags have lint, hair, and junk in them that will get into the engine. Next time you buy a fresh pair of rags, throw them in the dryer to see how much loose lint there is on the screen. Of course thousands of engine builders have used rags... but I'm anal retentive! If you have alot of miles on the bike then a fresh set of rings and a fresh hone won't hurt, but you will have to re-follow the break in procedure. But as long as you're careful taking the pistons off and be gentle with the rings you'll be fine. |
