I have a 2001 X1 and was wondering what is a good exhaust to go with? Can you just cut and mod the stock exhaust?

What are your goals?

Noise?

Power?

Noise AND Power?

Personally, I have become a real HUGE fan of the D&D's

Had the slip on before, LOUD, great sound..ran better...

Wnet to the D&D Full System(race), and WOW... no more flat spot, raw acceleration all the way to redline.. perfect...

There are other systems, and slip ons out there, BUT, IMHO, they dont hold a candle to the D&D's, on a stock motor....

I would like it to sound better and more power. Don't really want to swap out the ECM to a race due to me using this as a commuter bike. Chase what are my options? Thanks as always for the help.

Check with Al at American Sport Bike - I think he was working on trying the DirectLink tuner on the older DDFI system of the X1 / S3. And don't be shy about using a "race" ecm on a commuter (my S1W has the "race" ignition box on it with 6800rpm redline; a Thunderslide jet kit; "race" air filter and Vance&Hines SS2R muffler - I ride it every day I can, no hiccups or problems at all).

All the term "race" means is, they didn't go through the hassle of certifying the box for public use. It's a stronger spark curve, higher redline, and different fuel map (DDFI only). Nothing at all that will keep you from running it on the street if properly installed (sensor re-zeros as required, etc).

Just about anything will sound better than stock. Listen to other bikes in your area, see what brands you like/dislike, and go from there. I do know D&D makes one helluva pipe - we installed one on a Street Bob at the shop and with a 103 stroker kit, S&S cams and custom EFI map it put out 112hp at the wheel. Pulled the D&D....it LOST 17hp!

Well, I have been using my bike damn near everyday, with that Race ECM...

Its worth every penny, ESPECIALLY if you get a good airfilter, and the full D&D exhaust.

The problem, is, these bikes are set-up to run inherantly lean to pass EPA standards...

The Race ECM fattens up the mixture, Rich is good on these bikes...

So, you are looking at 200 fro the race ecm..

and, if you go with the D&D slip on(sounds BADA$$), another 270ish...

YOu will be surprised at the difference in how it feels, response, etc...

My bike has the Race ECM and the Pro-Series Supertrapp pipe. I'm very happy with both. The supertrapp is not as loud as the D&D which is basically a wide open drag pipe.

I'll reiterate the sentiment that the race ecm is necessary if you switch pipes. IF you're not changing the ecm, don't bother changing the exhaust.

"Race ecm, free flowing can and less restrictive induction are all mods I have had on my bike for 20k+ miles with no ill effects and no negative drive ability problems.

The Vance & Hines is a good muffler at a good price. They are on Ebay all the time sold direct from V&H.

Initially put it on with the bolts loose. Then after adjusting it's position so that there are no stresses bolt it down. Mine has 50,000 miles and 10 years on it with no problems.
Oh! some anti-seize compound around the pipe where the muffler slides over will help with removal during a transmition oil change.

I would advise against it. I ran my stock '96 S1 with aircleaner, pipe, and jet kit against a Thunderstorm M2 (a '99 up) with a home made straight-piped header, intake, and rejetted...I left him like he was standing still (and I had a passenger!). These things like a large muffler volume. A straight pipe tends to make EFI tuning harder, too (usually needing a custom map). There's a few people here that've had good success using automotive glasspack and louvered core race mufflers.

I have been very happy with modified stock mufflers on my M2 and S3T. I bought a Wileyco and found it to be louder then I prefer. I always ride with ear plugs and do not like to hear the exhaust at 70MPH.

Had a Borla on 99 S3 till factory race-package.Borla is the best sounding muf. I ever heard! Now have fact. race can sounds blunt not as nice but have to use with race header. On S2T Vance-Hines sounds deep and quite, but not as nice as Borla on my S3.Heres where I differ from Aaron,85,000 miles on V-H no maint + still quite as the day I bought it.But my eng. is in milder tune than Aarrn on my S2T.
