hey all, i've been a steady lurker here for awhile. just wanted to share a coupla pics of my latest franken-bike. it's a superbike rolling chassis (orig. a '97 916) with an '02 900 supersport motor. as you can see, i've still got to attach the headers, and as you can't, finish up building the battery box. all stripped down: half-faired look:

Looks great, send me your header pipes and I will powder coat them red. It would look awesome. |

Awesome, clean and sporty! So you have the benefits of a newer motor - with the looks of the older chassis and body work? Enlighten me on your choices of mix and matching? Here is an old pic of us uncrating a new Pantah in 1984!

sorry it took so long to get back to checking this thread.... it's all finished except for tearing it back down and painting or PC'ing the frame. duckbuell, out of the many reasons for swapping the motor, increased reliability is the main one as the charging system on the newer motor is far superior, half as many cams and valves, and no radiator and coolant. a trade off of about 40 HP for 20 lbs. of weight is also up there, with no loss of torque, as both motors made the same torque, and actually about the same HP up to about 5K RPM. i don't race, and the SBK motors are real-deal racebike motors that deserve to be raced, which i don't. |

That's a killer combo. A lot of those crazy fools in European nations seem to like lopping one cylinder off and racing 'em. |

and no radiator and coolant. Good job there Mr. Onespeed. The frame begs for a Desmoquattro though.I just did maintainance on my Buells'...very satisfying.I now brought in the 996 for minor service and discovered a water leak at the rear cylinder base gasket. That's the Achille's heel of water cooling. Now i'll need 3 months to get it back up...fortunately it's highly maintained so there won't be other surprises... |

You call lopping one cylinder off crazy, or the one cylinder racer crazy? Rocket |

I have a Performance Bikes where these Supermono racers had turned V-twin Ducatis into supermonos...I guess spares for the real Supermono model are getting scarce??? I love singles. In fact, my next bike will be one...but I think I'm too hefty to attempt to race one. I think you need to weigh below 150lbs to benefit from those power-to-weight ratios!

Spares might be scarce, but Supermonos are not cheap, lol. The lopping off of one cylinder is a pretty neat solution to going single cylinder racing. Despite what mostly the press and not so much the trade is telling us about how collectible 916 genre bikes are becoming, and especially the early model 916's like mine, I have yet to see evidence of serious price rise. 916's could be had this past winter for as little as £2500. Even tricked up ones sporting Termi's and chip and Ohlins shocks etc were worth little more. Foggy rep's have been around for not silly money. My friend Alex who has the 2000 model 996 monoposto with lovely Infostrada paint (not stickers), which is a lovely bike with 3800 miles from the day he bought it new, is sat on new rubber in a showroom at £4500. Trust me, it is a stunning unmessed 996 in very very near mint condition, and it has been for sale for nearly a year. Too expensive in the market place, which is ridiculous really. So yeah, lop of one cylinder of a cheapo and the track is your oyster. Rocket |

haha, ducxl i was thinking the exact opposite...the chassis was begging for the 2V motor and rick_a could you point me to where you got that photo? looks really cool, and i'd be interested in a home-brew supermono.... |

It came from Performance Bikes magazine, IMO the most informative and interesting motorcycle magazine anywhere. Also check out BareBones Machine, The Thumper Page, and the British Supermono Association. (Message edited by Rick_a on March 27, 2007) |
