I hauled a 97 S3T home from WI a couple of months ago, and initally all i could find wrong with it was the front isolater starting to fail, tires needing replacement, and a missing spring on the vance and hines muffler. I ordered a front iso from Dave S, And new road attack tires from ebay. I put the back end up on the swing arm stand, and was inspecting the belt and found it to be cracking and missing a tooth. This looks to be a pretty involved procedure according to my service manual. Do I also replace the rear isolaters? how do you know if they are bad? Do you repack the swing arm bearings? If you do how critical is the swing arm preload? What drive belt do you use? What else am i missing? The bike has 40,000 miles on it and is in great shape, and was well cared for. My local dealer's parts dept. does not instill confidence. Thanks for any help Mike PS Now that Dave S has turned his focus on archery, who should i call for advice and parts? In order: Isos Yes they should be replaced IF they are cracked or original( dry rot) its a job to remove them so I would replace them while down. Swing arm brgs if they are free, no catch Inspecct and re grease, preload is specified in FSM yes its critical you will destroy brgs if too loose or tight, Drive belt to use , standard for your bike OR 06 later "uly / xb12r belt contact American Sport Bike for details. ( you replace the pullys I think ) check the pullies esp the rear as to the condition of the Hard plating check wheel bearing condition, Brakes and fluid change the gear box oil check the battery check the primary chain tensioner. ( the metal in the plastic shoe ) lamps wiring rubber parts steering head bearings. change fork oil. almost all procedures are documented in the KV. Check the KV here, and post questions here, Daves is still "here" Andy is at Appelton HD and is close by |

Timn Check the rear PM wheel on the drive side. Make sure the the outer bearing isn't loose in the wheel. Joe |

Nope, same pulleys. 128 tooth, 1.125" wide, 14mm tooth pitch. The XB and tuber 27 tooth front pulleys are exactly the same part number. Al |

So does the XB belt fit with M2 pulleys, front and rear? |

Yes. Get the XB12X belt. I got mine from Daves for about $140. Feels more like plastic than rubber like the original belt did. But it fit ok and I have almost 20K on it now. |

Get the XB12X belt. Nope. The Uly belt is not the same 128 tooth belt that is on the other XB bikes (except the XB12SS lightning long). The confusion exists because the Uly belt is the one that drove the Hybrex technology used in the 06 and later bikes. The regular XB belt is identical in CONSTRUCTION and technology as the Uly belt, but it is not the same size. The 2" longer swingarm makes the uly/lightning long belt longer. I'm not sure of the exact tooth count on it, it isn't listed in the parts manual.} It is, however, the same size and pitch as the tuber belt. Buell has not gone on record as recommending the new belt for use on the old bikes. We've sold a lot of them for use on tubers, though, and have not heard of a failure yet. I would also disagree with the statement "Feels more like plastic than rubber like the original belt did." If you hold a brand new Gates belt (OEM tuber belt) in your hand with a brand new Goodyear (OEM XB belt), you would definitely say the XB belt feels rubberier, the Gates belt Plasticier. But the Gates belt when it's been on the bike a while loses the hard plastic feel that it has when it is new. Al |

Al Thanks for your help today, it is good to be able to talk to someone who sells buell parts and also knows buell. There should be a order for my new belt waiting at your sales desk. Thanks again Mike |

Looks just like my 2000 S3 -- I bought it as a leftover a year ago with 3 miles on it. I have a little ove 5000 now, and with the warranty expired I am no starting to do most of the maint myself. After returning from a 1000 mile weekend trip to New Mexico last weekend I noticed a groove cut in the topside of my belt -- I must have picked up a rock -- we did do abuor 200 miles on dirt-- My buddie has an old -- brand new belt--from his S3 that has been sitting in his garage for about 8 years- should I consider using it ? Also is it possible to just pull the bolt at the isolator and squeeze the belt through -- Thanks-- Bneck Colorado |
