I am possibly looking at picking up a somewhat cosmetically challenged 1997 black S1 with a silver frame, PM wheels, what looks to be a Force exhaust, new rubber, lots of misc aftermarket bits, Compufire ignition, a hypercharger that would definitely have to go ...and a bunch of other misc mods .. some of which will stay, most of which will be stripped down if it were mine... Like I said, this bike is a bit rough on the outside .. not the cleanest (but anyone who has met me knows that cosmetics aren't an issue- it will look like new in very short order - one weekend in the garage will handle that), however - runs very strong - so it is mechanically sound even with 21k on the clock.. First question - aside from standard recall stuff - what am I looking out for ? Second, what would a fair price be ? asking price is 4000... And lastly - with my 99 M2 being basically done aside from some bits being powder coated and some dyno tuning .. why do I want this bike? .. an S2 or S3 has been there in the back of my mind - but an S1 is what attracted me to Buell .. bought the M2 for the more favorable seating.. but when I sat on this S1 - it fit !! Enlighten me please .... Brian |

Tattood, I'm a black 96 S1 owner and love this thing. Spent a lot of time carving mine to look just the way I like it and haven't seen anything out there I'd replace it with. I've owned mine for six years and have no problems to report so I can't help you there. The only downer I encountered was when they replaced my coil over shock with a freakin' thermos bottle. A buddy bought a 900 monster and convinced me I should get a street bike after being in the dirt for years. The Buell had the looks, fit, feel, sound and it was love at first sight. Seeing that you already have an M2 then you won't be surprised as to its ride and feel, but jeez, look at that bike!!!! Whatever you decide you can't go wrong, your already a Buell owner!! |

Tattoodnscrewd If you have a choice 98 has the thunderbolt motor, it looks like the 97 doesn't. My 96 has the less adjustable forks I'm not sure about the 97. I have a S1 and a S3. They both serve very different rolls. I have never had an M2 so I think you won't notice any difference until you start pushing your limits, then the difference between the M2 and the S1. Primary chain tensioner, swing arm isolators, >20kmiles lifters need to be replaced, as well as valve springs and good valve job. The factory valve job is fine unless you push hard then it lets you down. Suspension needs to be looked at hard. Joe |

at that age-- it'll likely need isolators, springs in the front (never a strong suit on tubers), mebbe selas and bushings, perhaps a rear shock . . . . the S1 is lighter, perhaps just a touch faster or slower (due to the lack of T-storm heads on the minus, and and fairly low milage on the plus) of course, it's an S1, a scoot that drew many to Buell in the first place, and that's worth a bunch if these items are still stock, and in need of attention, I'm think 4G is a little high -- but, at the end of the day, if it's worth 4G to you, that's what you should pay! |

96's are still like a limited production bike, they have less of the cost saving measures dictated by accounting that were added during the later years production run, i had noticed a few differences between my early 97 and my 98. (can't recall em off the top of my head now though... i liked my 97 way more than the 98. S1's rule! |

Well ... I think I can live without the t-storm heads ... it would give me upgrade room in the future ... but it has some nice goodies and it is the baddest looking Buell made ... I think it will make the perfect stable mate to my M2 .. Cross your fingers for me .. and maybe by next week I will be posting how I sold the wife's non ridden Blast and picked up a 96 S1 (going to try to get it for a bit less than the 4000 asking price though!!!) Thanks guys ! Oh .. anyone want to buy a 1986 BMW 325 and/or a 1987 BMW L7 to help fund this new bike ? |

Put the deposit on it today ... will get it either at the end of the week or beginning of next .... Not a bad thing, get rid of the Blast, get rid of 2 older BMW's (still have 2), get rid of a 97 Honda Shadow ACE and I get in return, no more note on the Blast, a 97 S1, and nearly 6 grand in cash ... WOOHOOOO !!!!! What a way to start the New Year !!!! |
