I'd been posting on the quick board and lurking for some time, just got my first Buell (2002 Cyclone M2L) and I already have some questions! How can I determine if the 2002 M2L front shock mount recall has been addressed on my bike? Also why do all the Harley dealers in my area (Washington DC metro area) insist that my owner's manual is wrong and that I need a 1000 mile service not a 500 mile service? I'm currently at 399 miles... |

Any Buell dealer can run your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and determine what recalls have been performed on the bike and which ones (if any) are outstanding. |

Because they're HD, not Buell. Find a 'real' buell dealer ASAP. Not every HD/Buell dealer is a 'real' buell dealer. Real Buell dealers have lots of Buell bikes and merchandise in their showrooms. I asked my dealer to change the oil and primary fluid on my bike when I bought it (used). They said OK. Then they jerked me around on something else later, and I started to wonder if they really did do the fluid change. So, I did an oil and tranny fluid change at home myself - turns out they didn't do it!! They lied - plain and simple. One of the most important things you can do to make sure your bike lasts a long time is follow the break in procedure in the owner's manual religiously. Tell the dealer the owners manual says 500 miles, and you insist that they do it at 500 miles. Scratch a big X in the oil filter so you know they changed it, and put a drop of fingernail polish on the primary drain plug so you can tell if it was removed. And whatever you do - Don't Trust them. Even if they are a "real" Buell dealer, they are not experts. They probably know practically nothing about Buells, especially an older Tubers like your Cyclone. Here's a good test. Ask the shop manager to show you his shop manual for your bike. If he doesn't have one, can't find it, blows you off, or it is still wrapped in plastic - go elsewhere. If he knows exactly where it is, it looks well used and grimy - you're in the right place. Nick |

Thanks guys, yeah I've come across some real attitude with the local Harley shops, seems like that's an unfortunately common occurrence. Ah well, if anyone knows of a GREAT dealer within 100 miles of Manassas, VA I'd love to know about them... |

JC: Congratulations on the new bike! Harley's used to have the first service at 500 miles and then changed it to 1000 a few years ago. Perhaps the dealer forgot or is not aware that older bikes had an earlier first service. I am still "old school" thinking so I had the 1000 mile service for my 2003 Superglide done at 500 miles anyway. The service was included in the deal on the bike when I bought it in 2003 but they did think it odd that I brought the bike in so early. I am not aware of any shock recall on the 2002's. The recall that I am aware of was for the 2000 models. If you have any doubts, you can call Buell Customer Service. I have found them to be very helpful in the past. The number is (414) 343-8400. Jc - check out Storm Fronts, DC-VA-MD Buell Riders. There's also some guys from the Roanoke area on Storm Fronts as well. These guys are from your "area" and can give you some feedback on local do and don't dealers! Enjoy your M2. My husband has about 42,000 miles on his and will ride it anywhere!

Jc, Of the DC area dealers I have dealt with, The Washington HD and Annapolis HD are the ones I will deal with. I use Annapolis because I am closer tho there but I have had good service at Wash HD. It's a few miles south of the beltway just across the bridge. Don't even bother going to Elkridge HD, no Buell at all. I've only visited the HD dealer up in Gaithersburg. They are a multi-brand place but do have some Buells in there. Check out the DC BRAG site. One of the best sites for info. I believe the link to it is under the LINKS topic. |

I have had problems with dealers screwing things up that later led to problems. The worst was not replaceing the moter mount to cylendar head bolts. Do your self a favor buy tools a book and a buddy that can help if needed and fix it your self. Enjoy the bike and congradulations. My m2 is loved by the wife and me it has been in nine states two up on one trip. |

RE; the shock recall- If you have a gas canister attached to your shock via hose clamps, you don't need to worry; it's been done (or doesn't need to be done.) The recall shocks were the self-contained ones or the early S1/S2 with the exposed springs. Check the service bulletin listing in the knowledge vault for all applicable SB information. Whodom; Don't count on your local Buell dealer knowing of whence he speaks; I argued with a local service manager for over fifteen minutes over a bulletin he claimed didn't exist until I pulled a copy out of my pocket that I'd downloaded from the KV....... I'm not from the DC area, but I also bought an '02 M2 recently, and have had similar experiences with my local dealer. They do sell buells, but judging by the attitudes of some of the sales people, they don't really consider them worth looking at. My bike has almost 20K on the clock, and I'd like to get it serviced before putting it away for the winter. The tip about the nail polish and the scratched filter will definitely come in handy Thanks for the advice, this thread came at a good time. |
