This thread speaks to PERFORMANCE not COMFORT.Buy a 'Glide if you want comfort,or a VTX if you want to practice economics 101. I value comfort second to performance in racing MACHINES. That's my beef.I used to value my fellow American but am now enlightened to the global market, let the best MACHINE win.And i don't see Buell in either WSBK OR AMA superbike, and as an athlete, that is telling. |

Secondly, this thread is addressing any number of reasons why folks buy "jap crap" vs. say, a Buell. If in your mind, riding a bike is about going as fast as you can, fine.Obviously, that is not true for many many riders, as the repli-racer market is clearly not the total m/c market. I wonder about the athlete comment though? What has this thread have to do with athletes? Hey, you ain't runnin' the 100 yd dash, you are twisting your wrist and leaning. |

Buells' are billed as sportbikes. It takes a physically fit person to perform on a sportbike. Thus the athlete response.So.....given the choice, would Matt Mladin ride a Buell or an R1? And for My dollar(yen?)buisness sense would direct me away from a Buell.Which is why there is SO MUCH ridicule towards our community.Hey! I said community, like as in communal |

I said community, like as in communal I find the whole idea of caring what Matt Mladin would ride to be mildly amusing. Ditto the "community" part of motorcycling. This whole thread started with some derision directed at a guy for riding a particular motorcycle. That is very mature, for say a 13 yr old. Now, we are chatting about what some guy named Matt Mladin would ride. That is a similarly mature concern. I would care about this why?????????? |

Why do you ride buell? If you don't know why, and you let what other people say bother you, then go ahead and sell out with the other little kids and buy some communist piece of crap that goes 90 in first gear and falls into 359 pieces on a 30mph low-side. "That's all I got to say, about that." Chase, you are not violent. But you would make a good bouncer, bounty hunter, or in general a drinking partner with an iron fist..... haha |

Bigbadbuell, I know you are younger (21 years old I think I read) and are very proficient with cars and bikes, but this is a Buell enthusiast board. I think you'll find most of us are just that -enthusiasts. We like/promote/cheer for/ Buell and Buell products. That being said, most of us recognize some of the shortcomings of our bikes and accept them and/or work to fix them. My brother has an M2 - myself an X1 - and we have done some modifications to make the bikes more to our liking. I don't intend on giving you a History of Buell lecture, but with your knowlege of mechanics, you have to understand the difference between runs of small production lots vs. large scale productions in the transportation industry. In the smaller runs there are bound to problems. Current Buell bikes are receiving praise from the bike magazines. The Ulysses platform is proving to be a draw for the company of riders that never would have considered a Buell. I don't understand your need to diminish Japanese motorcycles (unless you just want to talk trash to your buddies). Many of the members of this board own Japanese bikes in addition to their Buells and like them for what they are. Personally, (and you may not care) I respect motorcycle enthusiasts. If you compare numbers (hp, 1/4 mile times, etc) between Buells and like Japanese bikes - the Japanese bikes will come out ahead in many respects. BUT you know that riding a Buell is a visceral activity. One filled with crude or elemental emotions at best. I engourage you to be a motorcycle enthusiast... a Buell enthusiast. Andrew |

Look...it's BASIC economics 101.For the same 10k we pay out for a top of the line Buell/w 103hp we could have a GSXR1000/w 150hp.THAT is why we take so much razzing. We're SUCKERS! Funny, I dont remember anyone giving me any grief about my 97hp, 13.5k Ducati 748, back when I bought it in 99, and lets not forget the cost of those gorgeous Termi pipes and all that extra stuff that came later, vices paying a nice LOW price for my X1 a year ago.... Been looking for another 748 for a little while, and they are still up there in price..6-7k.. Same thing witht eh Aprilia Mille, 7-9k It is what it is, plain and simple. If I really cared what the general poplulation though, I would propably ride a gixxer, BUT, even now, for my seconf bike, I am looking at my roomies TL1000R, another bastard bike, NO ONE likes this bike, which gives me just one more reason to love it... }Its not economics...its who you are dealing with. I like unique bikes....that simple. Chase |

However when I got my Buell S2 I got a really great deal (in my opinion) because I bought used. I'd feel apprehensive buying a used jap sportbike unless I knew the owner. I see guys dogging the crap out of them and dropping them alot. Also I'd like to hear back from you when you get the R1. I've personally never had a really fast inline bike and I'm curious what the difference from a torquey v-twin. Anyone else here with both a buell and an import want to talk about the good and bad points of each?} |

I've just felt defeated by others embracing this so called "global economy" which i only view as exploiting poor oppressed people in other countries. Before this i was the staunchest of supporters of my fellow American.I'm descended from a slew of Teamsters,UAW+ILGWU.And having never owned a Superbike other than my Ducati 996,i'm thinking of the Japanese I-4 now that i've been persuaded to ignore my fellow American's needs(that's ok). So,by the numbers a Jap "sportbike" is a better value TOOL.I'm very satisfied, and will keep my Buells' forever, but they're just Chinese parts(now) assembled in the USA anyways. other than that idon't have any pet names for my MACHINES,they're merely tools. |

Ask them if they would like to go BACK in time and live like they lived 10 yrs ago. |

So far my experience with other riders has been good. I get plenty of complements on the S2. Occasionally my friends that ride jap bikes will rib me a bit but it's light-hearted. At the strip my friends on katana's can beat me but only barely, I smoke em for the first 1/2 of the track. (Message edited by not_purple_s2 on October 23, 2006) |

I'm very open minded. But to tell you the truth, I am insecure. I can't fit in. I need a niche. I don't want to get a mohawk or chop one of my hands off, so I ride what everyone hates. And when they laugh, I tuck it. Then I pass on the outside. Then I'm gone. At red lights I wink at g/f's. I'm not looking for fights. But I AM looking for freedom. Economics 101. Not for me. The American dream is to have a big wasteful car in a big wasteful house, and ride a wasteful (although 60mpg is great) motorcycle. My Triumph and my Buell, two bastard children of the racetrack.... Both underrated. Both unappreciated. Both have left people stupified with the sight of my tail lights. It's 65% rider. I love all motorcycles. I think that if it has wheels, I belong on it. I love Jap, Italian, French, and all others. If someone ribs me on my bikes, I just laugh and tell them they are right. Then I get on with it. Then I call Chase and go for a round of BS. Miss riding with ya brother. You were always the one to get cut off!!! HAHA lol But ya gotta admit, I always had your back. Peace |

The first comment I got on my M2 purchase was that "anyone who buys a Buell is sending out a sick, twisted cry for help". I get ribbed about reliability problems and oil leaks etc, all from guys that don't ride them and swear to only ever ride thier brand. Fine by me I bought the bike I wanted. If I only bought the best bike in the magazines I'd have a new one every year and for what? A couple of extra HP, slightly better handling I won't notice on the street, or some design cue that noone would notice unless I pointed it out. I fell in love with an X1 the second I saw it in the window of Frederick HD and the salesman even looked at me funny when I wanted to drool over it instead of the showroom of Hogs! The way I see it any proffesional rider on a Buell will slap down any amateur on the fastest factory bike. When I raced dirt I saw people dish out thousands on mods and lightweight material only to get hammered by someone who practices more on a stock bike. If you want respect from Jap riders or any rider for that matter......RIDE, push yourself while they are at home diggin through a catalog for the correct sticker or the hottest exhaust. Fit your bike to your riding style, make the controls fit your needs and dimensions. Just doing that makes a great difference. Before you know it you'll be the better rider for knowing your machine while they wonder why the newest replica Alpinestars get in the way of their shifting or the Rossi leathers force them into an uncomfortable riding position. To hell with what anyone says, I can't hear them over my exhaust anyways. |

Basic economics say if i wanted a hayabusa or a zx-10 or any other way faster than a buell motorcycle i would have bought one. I bought a buell because at the time I wanted one. I have a love hate relationship with it, but still wouldn't trade it for a cookie cutter jap bike. that is what i tell any other bike riders including harley cruiser riders. If I wanted another bike, I WOULD OWN another bike.I have no brand loyalty. I don't hang it on other riders, as long as they ride. |

I have owned most brands... a bunch on IL4's, singles, vertical-twins, triples, even rode a Boss Hoss. I liked 'em all. I just happen to like Buells better than the rest. They scratch the itch the other brands couldn't reach. I set my bike up for me; seating, grips, handlebars, mirrors, footpegs, suspension... all for the purpose of a better ride, a better feel of the road thru the bike. I push myself constantly. The rush of going around corners fast, leaned-over, engine thruming, exhaust singing, is music to me. When I do ride with others, we like to nit-pick each others bikes. Sarcastic, smart-a$$ comments. It's fun! I don't care what they ride. Just ride the damn thing. Because I ride quickly (not fast), I get alot of practice. When my buddies want to do the same, they cannot keep up. I believe it's mostly the rider... but a quick, competent bike helps greatly. My Buell's handle like nothing I've ever ridden or owned. That's my edge. Several of my buddies have sold their "jap poop" and bought a Buell. I don't lose 'em like I used to. My "other" bikes are Norton's. Yet another misunderstood motorcycle. I like being on the edge/fringe. Enjoy your bike, enjoy your friends and have fun. Talking trash with your buddies is a gas, especially if your riding too! |

Come-backs for buell riders: Buells are like sex: long strokes, loud throaty growls, and most of the time you're nearly horizontal. On the issue of the stiff clutch - "It keeps my pimp hand strong." |

I haven't had a Buell long, but when I bought it, I bought it because it's what I wanted to ride. Plus, I really liked the work that the previous owner had done on the bike, and the price was something I could afford. I've had a small Honda, ridden numerous sport and cruiser bikes, and have been ever so slowly building a Roland Sands-style 'chopper' bike based off an old Honda inline twin I picked up for a song about 6 months now. And not being a particularly brand-loyal guy, I have to agree with Tunes... It's not what kind of bike you ride, but how you ride, and where your heart and head's at. I respect the guy who wrenches on his ride, and makes it work for him, who makes the BIKE look good, way more than I respect the guy who just dropped a mortgage picking up the latest catalog special to make HIM look good. But I respect them BOTH for being out there on two wheels in the first place. |

I think Buell riders are after a cool motorcycle that is unique, good looking, customizable, engaging, and has some mo-jo! Italian, British, Classic and Antique motorcycles have lot of these characteristics. Buell puts a modern chassis around a motor that has tons of character and torque. Which results in a total package that screams Hell Yea! to life and riding! So talking smack about jap crap is for kids, if you want to be a man about it, just walk up and urinate on their bike. |

I have owned alot of jap bikes.I have had the pleasure of riding just about every jap bike out there from the ysr50 to a busa to a 1800 goldwing(yes R1,s and gixxers included)I can also honestly say that just about every bike I have been on there is at least 1 thing I like about it.Alot of the bikes I really like alot. Most of the people I ride with have jap bikes and they love them. Now saying that,I have never found a bike that is more fun to ride than my Buell. Are they the fastest? Not even close.Would I trade my bike, that builds power as soon as it leaves idle for a bike that is 1-3 seconds faster in the quarter mile?Hell no!Would I trade arm stretching torque at any rpm for higher horsepower at 11,000 rpm's and is only 30-40 mph faster on top end? No.Would I trade my 45-58 mpg for 25-40 mpg?Yeah right.Would I trade my ugly but comfortable S3T that handles like a sportbike for a cool looking sportbike that is as comfortable as riding a moped to senior prom?Probably not. Now,would I trade my Buell for a gsxr1000 if I wanted a bike to ride around town, show off with, look cool riding around in nothing but my fake Oakleys, pick up local 18 year old girls, feel cool saying"yeah I got a gixxer", and very seldom go within 50 miles of my home?Of course I would\clipart {biggrin2}.I guess what I am trying to say is a gsxr or R1 or what ever sportbike you like is a great, very well engineered machine.Yes they will go 150,160,or even 180+ mph but how often will you really ride at that speed. Most of the fun in riding a sport oriented bike is riding the curves.Even on a fun aggresive day on a good curvy road your average speed is going to be less than 110 mph.For most people the average speed on a curvy road will be way way lower than that.Any speed under 120 mph is where the Buell's really shine. |

Nice TLR lake.I have never rode a vtwin as hyper as the suzuki. My brothers TL after we got it tuned right would start lifting the front wheel at about 7800rpm in 3rd gear.So then we had to play with suspension. If I had to pick a track bike The TLR would no doubt be my first pick followed closely by the RC51. |

It's actually a 750 Gixxer motor in a 600 frame with 1000 front forks. There are also a TON of great parts on this beast. Ohlins shock, Vortex rearsets & triples, M4 race kit, etc, etc. The only bad part is waiting 6 months until my next track day. I hate HATE winter |
