My transmission was always a little "crunchy" going from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. Lately, since installing the Baker Smooth Shift kit and after it broke in it developed a new twist. Sometimes, maybe once every 10th or 20th shift from 2nd to 3rd the bike will lurch or clunk when I let the clutch out. I assume that the dogs don't engage until there is some rotation in the transmission when the clutch is engaged. Any ideas? It's about 500 miles since the kit install, I use Mobil 1 75W90 gear oil, it shifts very easy and I can't feel any difference in the shifting of a good engagement versus a clunk or lerch engagement. I want to install the stock detent spring since I would really like more shifter feel, will the stiffer stock spring motivate the detent and drum to engage better? Any advise is always appreciated. Thanks, Den

Den...

The only thing I can think of that might cause that is worn shifter forks or excessive sideplay of the gears on the splined shaft.

I have a total of 1 hour of experience with these transmissions, btw.

When I did the install, shifter fork #1 that engages 2nd and 4th had a big gouge from the old drum. The cause was the bad spring plate in the clutch. I used crocus cloth to smooth down the fork and it slid on the drum as well as the other two. After break in it could have more play than the other two. The gears all felt good, consistent play and very little wear. Baker also makes shifter forks, don't now if they engage better, HD forks are only $34 but take weeks to get (haven't tried DaveS). Thanks and keep keep the opinions coming...Den

I called Baker and they said it could be the follower alignment, the pawl adjustment, the funky shifter fork, a stiffer detent spring may help, but it sounds like a pawl adjustment to them. By the end of all this when my bike shifts silky smooth I will have earned my PhD in Evo Sportie Drivetrain Science. Then I can charge more for my free advise!
