So, this weekend allowed me the chance to do a run through the Tail of the Dragon Rte 129. I thought it would be a lot of fun to try it out with my GF 2 up. We started out in Suches GA from TWO, ran through the smokey mountains and on towards the Dragon. Somewhere between the Smokeys and 129 the X1 started sputtering...Especially accelerating through 2500 RPM and 4500...and especially when going up a hill....it had gotten downright bad when we hit the dragon...So, here I am running the draon 2 up and embarassingly sputtering through the twisties...This morning the problem wasn't so bad, but an hour or so into the ride it started up again... My Theories so Far: Fuel Filter? ECM? Any Ideas guys? Thanks in advance... | ||

Have you done any mods? How many miles? Did it happen not too long after a fresh tank of gas? First thing I would do, is run thohg the gas..get it from somewhere else, and see what happens... Second, swap that fuel filter..if tis partially clogged, it will create probs, especially when trying to accelerate, adn under a heavier load would be worse..(needs MORE fuel).. I doubt the ecm woudl cause problems.. even a stock one, those problems seems to be isolated to idle, off idle response, AND, lower RPM cruising... ChaseSpeed, everything on the bike is stock its got 4400 miles on it. It did happen slightly after adding some gas...but I've since filled the tank 2 more times..(only use 93 octane). Per your recommendation I'll get rid of the fuel filter tomorrow and see what happens. | ||

Also, dog touched on this, check you O2 and see if its seated...mine has loosen up before.. And, probably a good idea to have a spare..I was eating them up last year(REALLY touchy gas)...Bosch 120414 or something like that..I forget the number, have it written down around here somewhere, BUT, you can grab it at any AutoZone, or where ever you choose, and its only 20 bones... When my head temp sensor was bad it ran as you described. Like a carbed engine with the choke stuck on. | ||

Sounds like a heat sensitive sensor to me... I've had several die on me and they all croak different. From stone cold dead to heat sensitive and a couple in between. And check your battery terminals. All sorts of problems have cured themselves with a simple tightening of the terminal lugs... it's happened to me too. '99 S3 | ||

Ah, and if your trip stops keeping its mileage, thats an indication that your battery in on the way out... ASK how we foud that one out...up on Rte2 in the middle of no where.... battery dies on an FI bike...the bike is dead as well...but, they tend to get really goofy right before.. Make sure you headers are on tight and that the oxygen sensor wire isn't worn through the insulation so that it's shorting out on the engine case. Also remember: if you're using the original battery from 2000, don't go to Massachusetts.  | ||

Thanks for the tips guys! The O2 sensor definitely did the trick. In fact, I think it might be smoother now than it was when I bought it with 1k miles on it. |
