What is that base gasket made out of???? For something that sprung a leak in under 2000 miles it sure isnt easy to get off. | ||

The original ones were made of cornflake packets and sticky back plastic. | ||

Use the spray-on gasket remover product that's available at your local auto parts store. Be careful not to get it on anything like plastic or paint. Spray it on and wait a few minutes, then use one of those chisel-type gasket scrapers. NOTE: the gasket remover does NOTHING to assist in the removal of THAT particular gasket (although it does wonders on all the rest!). It will bubble up the top layer and also burn little holes in unprotected skin, which adds to the illusion that it is helping to remove the gasket! A win-win for all involved! A new gasket on the pristinely cleaned surface, along with the proper sealer, should get you up to, maybe even more, than about 2000 miles before it commences to leak! I'll shut up now - maybe someone else on the board has had ACTUAL success regarding this operation! AL | ||

Used the gasket remover and already had Cometic metal gaskets. How much breakin mileage should I give motor with new gaskets and rings before the flogging begins?? | ||

Different builders have different break in procedures. When I did mine, I went the first 500 miles below 4k rpm, then the next 500 miles varying rpms up to redline. The key is to not really flog it too hard until the rings seat, which again for me was noticable with little puffs of smoke when I flogged it a bit too hard, letting off the fun rocker a bit droped the rpms, ending my puffs of smoke. I have about 6k on mine since rebuild and no smoke, runs like a raped ape. |
