Getting ready to do my gasket replacement from the base up. Would it be possible to just run a steel rod through the rear axle and put the rear up on jackstands or something to hole the bike upright? Or any other cheap ideas? Thanks Garrett |

Garrett -- ya found the nail with the hammer head, sir -- that's a great, stable and cheap way to support the read of hte bike (not so good when removing the rear wheel, though) |

I use landscape spikes, but just about anything would work that is less than 1/2" diam... |

I used a small length of rebar that they sell at Lowes in the cement aisle and a couple jack stands. The small rebar is too thin and will bend. The bigger rebar is about the same size as the axle and I had to grind down some of the ribs to fit. It's nice and stable and if you gently rock the bike from side to side you can even do it yourself. Den |

Rear stands can be bought pretty cheap on eBay (got mine for $50 shipped). Perhaps not as cheap as rebar, but it's much easier to get up and down by yourself. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Swingarm-Rear-Paddock-Motorcycle-Stand-Cycle-Bike _W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ10066QQitemZ4637628064QQrdZ1 |

If you have the jackstands...I just turn my passenger pegs over and put them on the jackstands... Actually the right side (opposite the kick stand) is on a jackstand and the left side is on a jack. I put the jackstand as tall as possible right underneath the footpeg then use the jack to stand the bike up nice and straight. It has worked for me.... |

You can also pick up a set (front and rear) of stands from handy enterprises for around $110. The set includes the swingarm stand and a front pin type stand that fits under the forks, but this only allows for tire/brake service. For a little more they will work up a set that will change the front to a front neck stand that will allow you to remove the forks for service. |
