This morning on the way in to work I had the joy of having a newer Corvette-based Cadillac ride my tail (way too close for my comfort) around an exit ramp. I suspect many of you could have easily dispensed with him by out cornering the car. I'm NOT that experienced. I maintained my 45 mph then accelerated away once I merged onto the right-most lane. What technique works best for you? I know what I would have done in my truck but I am much more vulnerable on two wheels. Any guidance is appreciated, and remember I don't have the skill set to out corner a sports car. | ||

Not much you can do, watch your mirrors and keep an escape plan, to the left or right. I probably would have slowed down even more while watching my mirrors to make sure he doesnt get closer. You have to hold your ground, you cant let someone push you past your limit/ability unless its to avoid getting hit. Its too bad most people dont give bikes the space they deserve | ||

Carry some marbles in your pocket. Drop them out without being seen, that should take care of him. LOL  | ||

I've actually thought of getting some rolls of paper party streamers. If somebody gets too close just let loose a bunch attached to the bike and have them flapping in the breeze up to 10' behind you. Probably get all tangled up in the bike though. (back to the remote controlled squirt gun under the seat plans) | ||

> What technique works best for you? I never speed up in response to tailgaters. I'm in front of them, and I am the one in control. I'll typically rest my finger or toe on the brakes (just enough to light up the tail light) to warn them off, and then I'll drive at or below the speed limit until they get tired and pass me. I'm a little more passive aggressive in my car, and if they keep it up, I'll really start to slow down. On my bike, though, I know a rolling rear end collision is probably the end of me, and it isn't worth the risk just to get back at someone who's being an ass. | ||

I've thought of carrying roofing nails, but that would screw it up for everyone else. Or small pieces of steel to flick overhead, but in that case I'd probably need a baseball bat to handle things at the stop sign... or a gun. If I'm going over 30 or so I'll spit a big goober once to the side, if that doesn't work I'll put one straight overhead. If they don't get the hint after that there's no learnin 'em, I'll usually pull off at a handy spot and let 'em pass. Typically they're not even thinkin about the bike, they're just in a hurry to catch Oprah or whatever. Today a guy was tailing me pretty close thru town, at the stop sign he pulled next to me, gave me the bro nod, and motored off. I figure he was checking out the bike. I think most cagers are just clueless in general. |
