My X1 seems to vibrate more than it should at 2250RPM to idle.
I checked the usual suspects (exhaust, isolators....you know)
My rear isolators are not messed up in any noticable way.
Is it possible for an isolator to go "bad" without actually falling apart?
Mine are original 2000 vintage with 64000 miles.
Is it possible that they get hard or something?
I already had my front/top isolator replaced last year.

I thought there was a recall on the original isolators. If the isolator bolt is resting on the bottom of the isolator or if the part line on the side of the isolator is twisted then the isolator has failed.

I had my 2000 S3 replaced at 15,000 miles.

It doesn't look like it failed like that.
I have the new improved ones.
I guess I'll put them in this weekend.
Tonight I put on the stock muffler to see if it changes my commute.

I checked the primary chain and it's ok.
The dealership was in the tranny recently.
I had rounded dogs on second gear so it would hop out of second if I applied the throttle slowly. They replaced a pile of bearings and third gear too.
They took me for $750 but it shifts like new now.

Nate -- ISOs can "fail" in a number of ways -- tearing and ripping, which you can see, and gradual hardneing of the rubber, which doesn't seem to have any visual indications . . . . . .

You said you checked isolators and specified the rears - did you check the front one? Or if the front has been replaced, the washer on top needs to be rotated with the flat cut towards the front (I believe). Just a thought.

Good idea Henrik, I had the front replaced last year. I'll check the washer.

It got me to work ok this morning though.
I took the back roads and got to race some horses : )

The "D" shape is flat-forward.
Perhaps The warmer weather makes the isolators more soft and therefore that's what made things different?

I'm still going to replace the rear set this weekend. I have the parts but I wasn't able to get the huge 1/2" bolt loose and I gave up.

For now, I can't see anything that will kill me

I managed to get the bolts out with my dad's 1/2" and my size 12 boot.
The right side dingus came right out but I can't figure out the trick for the left.

I'll finish saturday I guess.

I was getting some vibes at 11,000 mi. I had the motor out for a leaky top end and noticed some tearing on the iso's facing the "magic part", the swingarm mounting block. I would never have seen the tearing if I had not pulled the pieces.

New iso fixed the vibes...relatively speaking

Nate,

I have only done an M2, but I strapped the motor down, and lifted the frame off of the isolators. It was not an "easy" lift either, lot of pulling and sweat. I am assuming that, with the exception of the subframe, our trellis' are the same.

I winched my tail to the rafters and it will pick the bike right up but I don't have enough clearance to do anything in there.

There HAS to be a trick.

The trick is a auto-body repair hydraulic ram to spread the frame ever so slightly and the swingarm will fall right out.

If you have the rear heim joint detached (and enough slack in your oil lines!) use a plastic or white rubber mallet to message the mounting block down. Winching the bike to the ceiling is good, that is how the manual describes doing it, but I made a cradle of 2X4's and secured the motor to the floor. Made it easier...but not easy

What a metric assload of work!
I undid all of the heim joints except for the one I actually needed to undo.
My garage looked like a Buell-bomb went off.
My isolators were bad after all. sagging down and had little crack inside.
I just took my bike for a ride and I think I got it all together ok.

Yes.
The right side was easy.
The left side had me guessing big time.
The ONE heim joint that I needed to take out was the ONE heim joint that I didn't see!

In the future I know to:
Jack it up
Remove peg mounts
Loosen 1/2" allen
remove "secret panel" from right side of frame
remove the hugger
unbolt the heim joint under the rear fender.


I think I can do it faster than two hours next time but this time using the trial and error and swearing method
took me about 7 hours and the rest of my sanity.
