Around the interior of my rear wheel there are dirty streaks that spread from the center of the rim to the edge. My bike is dirtier than it usually is now- but I haven't seen this type of marking since I sold my chain drivin "87 Sportster 1100.

Are my bearings or seals going ( or have they gone)?

do you use a lot of degreaser on your rear wheel when you clean your bike?

When was the last time you pried off the dust seal and regreased your bearings?

I would remove the wheel, pry off the dust seal and inspect the bearing. Make sure it dosen't bind and moves freely. As long as it looks okay you can repack it with grease and reinstall the seal and be on your way.

Thanks.
I haven't used alot of de-greaser. Truth be told it has been 700 miles since the dust seal has been off and bearings re-packed.

Do not remove the dust seal from the rear wheel bearings, they are sealed doing so damages them and renders the seal useless!

do look closely at these and check for binding as Patrick indicated, when a bearing or seal fails the seal hardware between the races fails and grease and some times little bits poke out,

another possible, crank vent causing tranny oil to puke out of breather

there are other possibles depending on weather or not you have recently altered your bike and the condition of a number of things.

ps the things that protect the seals on the axle are not seals an packing them with grease will just make a mess
place enough grease on them to prevent rusting of the axle or spacer I use anti seeze(sp) my self
