My friends 97 S1 has a bad vibration problem. It vibrates like crazy even above 3K RPM's where it should be smooth. We found the front isolator de-laminating a little at the back of the isolator so he replaced it but it didn't change anything. We can't see any de-laminations in the back isolators but we haven't changed them yet. How do you adjust the rod links, the ones under the tank, by the swing arm, and down by the oil filter. The bikes frame has been custom painted at one time and the links have been messed with in the past, the S1 shop manual doesn't cover where the rod links should be set at. Any ideas on the vibration problem? Could the rear isolators be bad even though they don't look de-laminated? Thanks in advance for the help. Hodakaguy | ||

See if you can dig up the service manual for an early FXR (don't know if it'd be in the manual for later models). In there they describe how the top motor mount determines the how the motor, and thereby rear wheel, lines up vertically in relation to the front wheel. The front motor mount determines how the rear wheel tracks in relation to the front. Keep in mind, I writing from vague memory from when I owned an '82 Shovel w/ rubber mounted motor. Henrik | ||

The only mention the shop manual makes about the tiebars is that there set at the factory and you should never screw with them. My S-1 used to vibrate so bad that my prick would go numb. A new set of rear isolators and the more-than-it-should vibration went away. | ||

very much sounds like am isolator problem. If it is a 97 both the front and rear mounts are prolly overdue. You described the failure of an isolator perfectly, lots of shaking and apparent delamination. It can be tough to see the rear iso's coming apart because the frame pinches them rather tightly. I would say that you should never mess with the tie bars, but if it has not started shaking until recently, and the ties were adjusted some time ago, then the isolaters may be the issue. not a buell but... I set up my fxr with a front motor mount limiter and stock front & rear mounts. The heim joint links I adjusted to where I could thread the bolts at either end in by hand. No excess wear or vibration, I'm running 86" with heavy wheels. If you don't get any definitive feedback for your model LMK and I'll look it up in the service manual for my bike. Although I'd agree with everyone else so far that shot isolators sounds like a safe bet. 9 years sounds like time for a change, how many miles on the bike? Don't know about the Buell but replacement in my bike is no big deal. It includes replacing the swingarm pivot shaft, pressing new cleveblocks in the swingarm, and 2 new outer rubbers AIRC. Of course w/a buell YMMV and I may be totally off. Joe | ||

Perhaps your rubber baby buggy bumpers got hard with age? You know? so they look ok but they are no longer isolating you from the engine? | ||

I think the rears are also the problem. He is working on polishing a 2001 model swingarm so we can install it at the same time we do the isolators. Hopefully we can get them installed soon. He'll call Al and get the isolators ordered. Thanks, I'll let everyone know how it turns out. Hodakaguy | ||

Aside from making sure that there are no mechanical problems, you might want to try the Kuryakyn Iso Grips and Pegs; I put them on my S3T and they help a lot. |
