My X1 is a factory carbon fiber edition. However, some of the carbon is starting to get pretty faded. I have a hairbrained idea that I might want to paint over it some time down the road and create a custom paintjob I've always wanted to put on my X1. I'm not crazy about wasting a set of the limited edition carbon, but eventually it might get so faded that it looks like crap anyway. Anybody ever tried this before? Will it work and not look like crap or should I just get a cheap set of plastics and have them painted? |

Have a paint shop buff it out -maybe reclear it and buy another set for painting. Just my two cents worth. Babwebber Seth has two sets of X1 plastics for sale. |

How about you mask off the desired pattern and sandblast the remainder to a no-gloss finish? Perhaps not. Bugs would stick to the rough surface badly I think. |

i have sanded and re-pollished two of the s2 air cleaners,, sanded to remove previous scratch damage. then rubbed them out with a good swirl and scratch remover.. they ended up looking like new..hope it helps but i would say try polishing before painting.. |

Deltacruiser, I painted a CF undertail for an M2 from American Sport Bike without any problems. You must sand/scuff all areas you plan to paint to make sure the paint adheres to it. I painted it black then clear coated it and set it in the over for about an hour and a half at 250 degrees..(I think..or what ever the lowest setting was). It's been over a year and no peeling or flaking... |

You may be able to buff out the fade, but the carbon it's self is probally faded. The clear coat on top of the CF can be painted, I have a CF fender on my bike, it has been painted for well over a year now with no problems. Almost all the bikes you see racing are painted CF... |

A reputable painter along with some clearcoat incorporating some flex agent will work wonders on your CF and will help keep it looking new longer. Trust me, before you paint over that rare CF/Blue Kevlar bodywork, try some clearcoat! 1313 |

I just scuffed my cf air cleaner cover with some 180 grit and shot it with some rustoleum. The paint adhered just fine. |

What is the value of a full set of Buell CF?? What would one expect to pay for it? |

If you could find a set of X1 CF get out the check book you are looking at better than 2k for all cf parts, I have the 01' & 03' buell accessory books they listed cf for the X1 in 00 or 01 it was quite expensive. you may be able to get it from asb for a little less it is not cheap, i have some of the e-bay knock off its not well made but its better than no cf, I will likely be trying to clear coat it as suggested by 1313, [ he knows CF, got some real cool bits on his S2 ] (Message edited by oldog on April 16, 2006) |

Okay, I'm convinced. I won't paint over my CF. It's just too rare. I'll find a cheap set of plastics and paint them if I decide to go that route. |
