Okay...I have a dilema...

I am about to move to texas..most of ya'll know that...

I have been watching my gaskets, and the base, and primary have been leaking..okay...keep oil handy...

WEll, it seems like the rear head gasket is leaving a bit of residue in between the head and the cylinder, BUT, its still running great...

Now, first, I have to ride this thing to Mass next week(500+ miles)..what do ya'l think?

Second, I am moving into an apartment complex..and I will not be able to work on my bike there....SO, I will be forced to deal with the stealership...what do you think the labor will be on something like that?

AND, do I HAVE to get new jugs to go up to a 1250 ? Or can teh stock ones be bored? and I am assuming I have to do the heads too right? I kinda wanna do things in one fell swoop...BUT, MONEY, time, and a place to do this are major players...

I am looking for info, and input..either way.....Mean while, I am gonna make some calls...

If you have the money available, spending a grand at NRHS for Axtell Nikasil 1250s and forged race pistons speeds things up dramatically because they can set the ring gaps for you and install the pistons in each bore. It then becomes a drop-in installation doable without pulling the engine from the bike.

I just dropped the front, side and top motormounts and lowered the engine with a pair of winch straps. Did the whole top end rebuild from there.

Shipping was fast as hell.

You can also have the stock barrels honed and measured and buy oversize pistons for them...but it's a multi-step process: pull it all apart, get the honing done, then measure the new bore and order the new pistons/rings (which can be forged vs. cast if you're smart). And you won't have those nice slick Nikasill bits...

Well, first, Iam a broke as hell active duty chump...so..I dont have the grand available..or the time..

I talked to Scott at Revolution, and it seems my best option(and only option), isto just replace the gaskets, adn call it good.. which irratates the snot outta me..

Especially considering, I have no where to do the work..or the money to do said work..

When my rockers started leaking it left it looking like a head gasket was going.

Going from one base to another. No access to a MWR hobby shop?

Jim,

a good shop will need the pistons and rings when they do a bore job. So that the bore will be fit to a piston/ring set-up. Just to acomadate manufacturing tolerances

I dont know if the MWR shop in Corpus will allow it...I know they closed a few of them.. the one here in LIttle Creek for example...

I dont know... I am hoping the primary isnt leaking, I need to CLEAN the bike, and watch it for a bit, to see exactly what is leaking...I am really hoping the primary isnt leaking...as that is a whole can of worms I can't deal with...

this sucks...

Chase, I've done the primary gasket and the rocker covers/gaskets on my X1 and both of them are pretty easy to do and relatively inexpensive if you have the tools available to do them yourself. You need a torque wrench for sure and a battery terminal puller to get the shift lever off. (About $5, but makes it a lot easier.) You could easily do the primary in about an hour or two at the most. The rocker covers will take you about a good afternoon or so if you go slowly and carefully. If you could get the parts and you have the time, you could probably do them before you have to leave next week. Both the primary and rocker gaskets are now much improved metal gaskets available from Harley. They have worked great on mine for several thousand miles with no leaks.

I'd be very careful riding 500 miles with a bad rocker leak. When mine started, it was minor, but within about 300-500 miles it got really bad really quick, even though the bike still ran fine. It was just messy and maybe dangerous to have all that oil spraying around. I didn't want to get any on the tires.

See, the thing is, I DOUBT its the rocker box gaskets...they are DRY in that area.

There is a bit of moisture/gunk right in between the jug and the head..though, I would imagine, that if the gasket was gonna go, it would have by now.

I know I need new base gaskets(between jugs and primary)...

AS far as the primary, IF it isnt coming form teh base gasket leak, it isnt the outter gasket that is leaing(left side), it is the one down the center..which will be a MAJOR PITA..as it will require complete tear down of the primary....time, yeah, I could probably get it done before next week time wise, BUT, there are 2 things lacking, money, and a place to work on it..this is really stressfull...

Oh well...guess I really dont have a choice as far as riding all the way up to Mass anyway, I need to put the bike IN a moving truck, and flat-tow my other truck behind that, down here to VA..still have no idea what I am gonna do with me OTHER truck...

I don't have any bright ideas for you, but I feel your pain. Your'e right, major PITA. Both of those are a lot bigger project than just the left side primary and the rocker gaskets. Hang in there.
