Ok, so I purchased my 99 S3 from a used bike dealer in my state. After much more wrestling and arm twisting then it should have taken, they have finally delivered it to a Buell dealer to have the throttle stop recall done. The Buell dealer said it will take a week to get the part and did I want anything else done. I explained that I am a "do-it-yourself" kind of guy, but they can get me a service manual and I will consider what if anything else I want them to do. So, what I am asking you guys is what, if anything, should I have the dealer look at on a 99 S3 with 5,000 miles and fuel injection? I haven’t ridden it, but it is a clean machine that does not appear to have been abused or dropped. I don’t want to spend a lot of money there but feel like I should spend something (but only if there is a least some value in it for me)! |

the FSM is a must, there are some recalls that need to be checked to see if they have been done, the shock is the biggest one, there is a recalls list in the KV Welcome to the madness..... Hey oldog, thanks for the quick post! Don't I know you from the Cycle World forum? I'm "luckyme" over there and I think you answered some Buell questions for me a couple of years ago when I 1st got the "itch". All of the other recalls have been done, I had them call in the VIN before I agreed to purchase. I know I need the FSM, but feel like I am using a credit card to buy gum! I doubt there is much service $$ in the throttle recall so I'm looking for a way to "let them have" a 1/2 hour or hour of other labor so they can at least make a little money on me. So for instance, I know there is some reader that only they have for the ECM and FI, should I have them check/reset anything or?..... |

You could try a TPS reset (Throttle Position Sensor), usually about a $45 charge and usually only a dealer can do it. Deltacruiser |

Before you take it to a DEALER for the TPS, do this: remove the negative battery terminal, then the postive battery terminal ... Strack the terminals together like you would strack a match ... Put the positive terminal on, then the negative on then go for a ride(could take 50 miles to reset BRAIN BOX) and see if this corrects the problem ??? This is for fuel injection models !!! Let me know if this does the job ??? |

Scott: It was not me, glad to help, get the recalls checked and done. Ride the bike with fresh gas, clean plugs, and a charged battery, if it runs crappy, you may want to PM Buellistic a central Fla Bueller used the procedure above to "reset" the ecm and indicates it works one of the tools that FI Buellers that DIY need is the software to work on the ECM, and a note book or Palm Pilot. see American Sport Bike or Daves The only other major item has been mentioned by Buellistic above that is do the oil pump gear inspection replace if needed there are threads in the KV that deal with the issue. Again Welcome to the madness. |

Hmm...I have a feeling that one is probably more work then I am willing to pay the dealer for. At 5K shouldn't I have some miles before I really have to worry about it? I started thinking last night that maybe I should look into having the primary chain tensioner replaced. what do you think a dealer would charge for that? |

Scott, It's pretty easy to visually inspect the oil pump drive gear, not so easy to change it, and catastrophic if it fails. I'd say change the oil as soon as you get it home and inspect the gear while the oil is drained, unless you just want to go ahead and have the dealer install the new upgraded gear. Otherwise, you can inspect it every so often and change it if/when the wear warrants it. 5k miles is probably not too early to check it. The primary tensioner is a pretty easy job. The dealer "might" do a more-precise job of adjusting the primary chain than you could, which is important for good shifting and low vibration. Also consider upgrading to the "Y" front exhaust bracket at some point. |

thanks whodom, can you tell from this picture if the exhaust bracket has been changed? I don't know exactly what the 'y' type should look like. my S3 (Message edited by scott_in_nh on February 14, 2006) |

Scott: the "Y" bracket is an upside down Y bolted to the front of the motor with the exhaust mounting. in the fork, I looked at the pix did not see it (Message edited by oldog on February 14, 2006) |

Scott, I couldn't get your URL to work either. Here's a pic of the Y bracket from the "X-1 Files" website (another good repository of Buell info): Here's what it looks like installed on the bike: You shouldn't have any trouble telling whether you've got the updated mount or not. The original mount gives marginal support to the tabs on the front top of the muffler and they are prone to breaking there. Here's a link to the Service Bulletin covering installation of the updated mount kit: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/bulletins/ExhaustMount95-00.pdf I'm pretty sure the kits are still available from your dealer or DaveS. |

Glad to help. In case y'all aren't familiar with the site, the "X-1 Files" has been a big help to me. The guy that wrote it evidently used to hang out at BadWeb and collected a lot of tuber-relevant info and put it in one place. It doesn't have all the resources of BadWeb, but it has a lot of tuber info that's easy to access and some good step-by-step instructions that you might not find here. Thanks for the link, good stuff! I'm thinking I am going to buy the service manual from the dealer and maybe some parts like the chain tensioner (if he has them in stock). I just didn't get a good feeling from the guy on the phone (are all Harley service managers gruff tough guys?)so F'em, I'll bring the bike home and do everything myself (as I have always done....). I can't wait for spring and some nice rides up in the White Mountains as well as street night at New England Dragway |

Yep, get both the shop manual & the parts book. Parts book provides exploded views which help a lot in identifying how things come apart or go together. If your local dealer is that Buell-friendly, you'd probably rather deal with DaveS at Appleton HD/Buell in Wisconsin for parts. He's a regular on this board (Appleton is a sponsor) and he'll sell you the parts at a 10% discount. Easier to phone him and get parts delivered to your door than to go to dealer to order, wait on dealer to get them and then ride back to pick them up. |

Bingo! I was originally thinking it would be good to support the local Buell friendly dealers, but Al Fitzgerald at Manchester H-D/Buell doesn't work weekends and is 30 miles away (though I might try going on one of his rides) and Meredith H-D/Buell (where the bike is now) is over 60 miles away and I'm not getting the feeling they care if they have my future business or not......Though with only one phone conversation I'm still willing to keep an open mind, they are involved in BRAG if that means anything. I already have gear shipped to work, so I'm betting after I get the bike home that I will be getting parts from Dave....... The dealer just called and it is ready to be picked up so i'm leaving work early. (Message edited by scott_in_nh on February 16, 2006) |
