You shouldn't ballbust the guy for wanting to go to another level."..YOUR RIGHT!!..THE "XB's ARE SWEET!!..you went backwords..lost your suspension and handling JT |

Must not have been that "beloved". I am thinking of converting my S-2 ,also---- I'm thinking I like black--as in frame and bodywork. Can't get that image of the black S-2 that Brankin posted out of my head.Bodywork is already at the painters. |

I was thinking also of turning my S-1 into a chopper... ... Stretching the rake crazy long and affixing a chromed set of highway bars.... My next plan was to plant the a*s end of the bike into the ground, nail my arms to the bars and kill myself for destroying yet another Buell... |

Hmmm, I do have a chopper, a '67 sportster in a rigid frame with an extended girder front end. No front brakes, kick start only, magneto, etc. I would NEVER think of putting one of my Buells engines in this thing. Why would I want to go fast with it? Then all the girlies couldn't go oooh, aaaah!!! |

When you can buy a complete Buell for 3500-4000. Guys can't help but use them for chopper conversions. I don't like it but it does make sense.. If you like riding a back breaking bike. |

I don't have any problem at all with "Chopping" a Buell! I chopped off a lot of factory "weak" items and replaced them with upgraded bits. Also "chopped" off the ugly license plate mount and reinstalled nice and neat! Go "Choppers" (in a straight line_____________________________! |

lol Bartimus is in a class all his own. You guys cannot compare Bartimus's 67 to a Buell. We are bikers. I started out building bicycles when I was a kid, I had a shed , around 100 frames, peg holed board in my shed that had all kinds of pieces off bicycles on it. I knew what everything was, I built some wierd stuff , mostly maintained all kinds of bikes, tandums, 5 speeds, even bought a dual chain dirt bike cw race bike for 500 bucks in 1982. You guys wana make me laugh. I look at a motorcycle as anything I want to make it. If someone wants to chop a Buell I say good for them. I hope they can afford to own two bikes cause I dont see ever losing a REAL Buell in my garage next to a stripper or chopper. Jersey is right , parts is parts its not about the factory its about your trip, its about FREEDOM. I cant wait for some jackass to tell me to chop my X1. He wont like what I have to say. Personally in a nut shell i wouldnt build a Buell chop . Im too tall for it. I can only roll with a big twin chopper. If anyone wants a big twin chopper they should buy my 1957 panhead. Owell I always say to each his own erratic insyncrosees. and yes thats original. |

I believe that any mod that doesn't make a bike faster, lighter, corner better, steer quicker, track more accurately or stop quicker is not worth doing. This was my exact reply to a co-worker who told me how he built his bike the way he wanted it. I told him that his bike is not built, like most, it is highly accessorized. |

sportsters actuall hold more of a resale value and have more miles on them,, compared to ultra low milage cheap buells. I've seen Buells on Ebay sell for less than 4,000. Plus you get better heads, forks, and can put "buell" on your list of parts... |

As I work on rebuilding my 92 Sportster's engine, and I consider the condition of the tranny in the S2 and other issues with both bikes, I consider the merit of picking up a low cost X1 and using what I can and parting out the rest. I won't because I prefer my own mods on the Sporty mill to the stocker T-Storm I'd end up with so I won't. But it would make a lot of economic sense. Putting an X1 engine into my cafe'd Sporty would not offend my motorcycle gods, even though the X1 would handle better. |

If I've got the right guy, Twodogs could no longer ride a Buell without being in some pain and had invested quite a bit in the motor. Can't blame him for wanting to hold on to what he could. Live and let live. Last I counted, choppers have two wheels. It's his bike that was used, not ours. If going fast in a straight line is what he enjoys, more power to him (no pun intended). Using a Buell as a basis for a V-twin chopper with some horses is a cost-effective way to go. He did offer up his parts on this board. From what I've seen, he's more Buell on a chopper than some who are on the original frame. Look for what's in common, not what's different. |

easy rider, i can see your point..your 100% right..but, he should have chosen his words.."Glad you're proud of your vintage/obsolete iron"..that drawing first blood. I think some of those " buell chops" are sweet..but some try to compare them "BUELL" ..they are nothing compared to S1/S2/X1/ETC...that they take apart to build them. I'm glad 2dogs has a bike he can ride in comfort.. |

Fair enough. I didn't know where the quote came from and assumed it was in reference to something truly old. |

Jt, I agree with you but looking good too, like plating a frame, a cool paint job or whatever, is and are a necessary part of the customizing experience for a more complete end result. Rocket |

Been following the chopper craze for many years and built some, both foreign and domestic and the way I see it is that originally when the boys came home from WW2 they enjoyed peacetime but longed for the excitement they had when flying or other military pursuits. Motorcycles seemed to be the closest thing they could have on a small budget and used military bikes were cheap but not very practical the way they were so they chopped or bobbed them to "MAKE THEM FASTER AND HANDLE BETTER" either for competition or just to enjoy the ride more. I too, subscribe to that idea and have usually built accordingly. But for some a chopper seems to enlist "look at me" and for that they build or buy bikes that do not handle the "RIDE" all that well but look stunning. Some handle the cruise mode fine if thats all you want but to enjoy what is closest to flying you need speed and handling. To each his own but I choose the flying mode more often and I realize I just might be in the minority as sales of bikes show. To each his own but enjoy Buell's for what they were intended. |

RT,I have 2 of the damn things to tear down.My racebike is getting a onceover when I get it back from Aus,that is the frame I intend to use for my black one as it is my original one.Motor from that one goes in my street S-2,that motor goes in the S-1 I got w/o the motor. It's going to look like a bomb went off in my barn. And I picked up another S-2 frame to do some stretching and might change the rake on steering to get more room for turbo/intercooler.Already have some parts at the powdercoaters.Pammy and Wes are making me a new motor for racebike. |

Brad, He posted the whole workup some time back complete with pictures, probably buried in the archives someplace. That was in your pre-S2 days so you probably missed it. |

Brad, yeah, I built it. I posted a bunch of pix in various places, but I don't think I ever put together a coherent account of the start-to-finish project. My excuse is, it ain't finished yet! I've got enough pictures of the various stages of construction to do a little write-up. I'll put it on my list of things to do, but I'll send you a rough draft soon. rt |
