I have my bike apart and was wondering how I could make the top of the engine look better. Powdercoat the rocker box parts? Chrome? Paint? I would guess that powder coat is the best.. whos has done what and whats your thoughts after it was done? | ||

gun coat -- you'll need an airbrush or detail gun, and a toaster over to heat em up in, but it works well, lasts, available in a number of colors, and, I have on good autority, it ewnhances heat transfer! | ||

Ok just some good ole engine spray paint seams to be the cheaper options and would last long enough. Perhaps some Mopar orange on the top cover and semigloss black for the middle section. Might as well see about that XB conversion breather set up. | ||

I sprayed XB covers and stock rocker boxes with semi-gloss black and called it a day. | ||

polish'em requires constant cleaning. Like to stay away from bling bling shiny stuff the requires hours of rubbing and cleaning. | ||

I did the top 2 pieces powdercoated black, 'cause it's impossible to reach in and keep them even clean, much less shiny. AL  | ||

I painted the top and bottom sections leaving the middle natural. Used two-pack which holds up well except it chips easy if you're not careful working around the heads. Rocket | ||

how much is powder coating? and can anybody recommned a good powder coater. I am thinking that poweder coat lower section a silver chrome, middle nice bold color red or blue, then the same silver chrome on the top section. | ||

You should be able to find several powdercoaters in Greater Hotlanta area, (if that is the area you're in) -suggest you call custom bike or hot rod shops and find out who they recommend. As to price, black is usually relatively cheap, cause most 'coaters do a lot of it and they can just add your stuff to the run they are already doing. When you get into the less used colors that's when the price goes up due to their having to clean out their equipment and set up to do a special color. Most powder coat operations are very familiar with H-D parts and could likely give you a quick quote for the color you want if you let them know what parts you want done. I once had a '75 shovelhead that I was building for my wife, and I had the frame, fork parts, all the alum. covers on motor & trans, a wheelbarrow load of misc. brackets and pieces - all done in either black or grey - for 300 bucks, total.
